Misjudgement
The splatters of blood speckle the dark and dusty walls. A maniacal, hysterical laugh explodes into life. The yelps of Bud and Lou rumble through the halls. They race around in circles in the alley, coming to claw the door from time to time.
"Ahaha!" Joker cackles. "See, Harley, that's a joke!"
He slaps his knee and hunches over. His laughter intertwines with a deep, breathless wheezing. He jolts upright, still screaming with giggles.
As his laughter fades a wave of explosive rage erupts. "Harley!"
The silence responds. His grim grin vanishes. He shoves his desk and papers cascade to the ground. His feet clatter noisily as he storms to her side.
He shakes her violently. "Harley!"
The Joker jerks back. His hands are held aloft as though in surrender. He searches her face. Not a flicker of emotion greets him.
Another grin begins to spread across his face. He feels the sudden rush of exuberance flood through his veins.
"Harley, you-" he stutters.
Confusion flickers across his face. The grin vanishes. His jaw twitches as he tries to find an expression that feels right.
No answer prevails.
He glares at her. "Harley, what have you-?"
Pain explodes in his chest. The resounding crash of the mighty Joker, the one and only Clown Prince of Crime, on his knees echoes. His hands tear at his chest. The pain of nails against flesh is overridden.
The pulsating agony of his racing heart refuses to be subdued. It hammers against his ribs with unrestrained force. It beats mercilessly against his lungs. His mind is filled with the sound of screams.
He hunches forward, eyes bulging and screaming his lungs empty.
Author's Note: It was odd writing this to a ballad. I'm rather pleased that I did. It's not my best, I know. I just don't think I can lift this one. My mind's gone blank and I may have to go on another hiatus…
Thank you for reading. I apologise for the quality.
