Shayna gave a soft gasp when her foster father kicked her in the stomach. How much was longer was she going to sit here and put up with his abuse? Sure she could tell her caseworker, but he would put on this perfect act and they'd never think anything was wrong. No, she had to get a bit more drastic with how she brought to light what he was doing. She had been in contact with Detectives Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler down at the NYPD Special Victims Unit and knew if she didn't tell her, she could end up dying at the hands of her foster father. With a sudden bravery she didn't know she had, she lifted a leg kicking him in the groin before taking off running towards the police department a few blocks away. She ran in ignoring the looks the other staff was giving her and went to the elevator jamming the button to go up and heard her name being shouted. She turned and took off for the stairs running up them with her foster father on her heels. She ran through the SVU doors looking at Elliot for help and yelped when he yanked her hair forcing her to her knees. She felt him kick her again before she curled up in a ball letting him continue.
NYPD, Special Victims Unit...
Elliot yelled for Olivia who turned her head to see what had happened. Elliot grabbed the man from behind, ignoring the fact he was fighting. Olivia knelt down and looked at Shayna, taking a slender hand in her own. She looked up at Elliot for the patience to not kill the man her partner was restraining.
"Hey. Hey, Shayna. It's okay." Olivia whispered, helping the 16-year-old into a sitting position. Shayna whimpered and Olivia stroked the girls hair. "Hey. It's okay. You're safe." She looked up at her partner who had put Shayna's foster father in handcuffs and was in the process of taking him down to booking.
"O-Olivia?" She felt tears well in her eyes and she leaned forward wrapping her arms around the woman's waist crying into her shoulder a bit. After about five minutes, she sat back up and winced as she stood up and it felt like he had broken her ribs. "I don't know what to do, but I know I can't go home with him. He's been doing this to me ever since I was eleven. What did I ever do to deserve this Olivia?"
Olivia bit her lip placing a gentle hand on her shoulder and smiled softly. "Nothing Shayna, please don't ever think that any of this was your fault. That man doesn't even deserve to be a foster father to you much less anyone else. Why don't I take you downstairs and have our medical examiner, Melinda, look you over so she can see the extent of the damage he actually did to you?"
"Thanks, Olivia, I hate that you had to see that. I had to do something and I knew you and Elliot were the only people who could help…" Shayna bit her lip and she looked down at the ground.
Olivia nodded and smiled as they walked through the doors to Melinda. "Hey Melinda? Can you do a full body examination on Shayna, please? We just witnessed her foster father beating on her upstairs and Shayna said he's been doing this to her ever since she was eleven. Shayna? I'm going upstairs to assist Elliot with your foster father."
"Can you please stay here with me?" Shayna grabbed her wrist lightly looking at her in a pleading manner afraid to be alone right now.
Olivia nodded at Shayna and as she felt her loosen her grip she smiled. "I just need to call upstairs and have Finn join Elliot in booking."
Meanwhile, Upstairs in Booking…
Elliot narrowed his eyes at the man sitting in front of him. He wasn't one to ever agree with child abuse. No matter the circumstances. Finn walked into the room, paperwork in hand. "So, Elliot, how are you?" He asked, ignoring the man the sat across from both of them.
Elliot nodded in a response to Finn. "Oh, I'm just great." Sarcasm filled his voice and Finn let out a small laugh.
"Why don't we get on with booking this guy?" Finn said, pulling paperwork out of a file.
Elliot nodded before turning back to the guy glaring. He was so pissed off to the fact that he would beat up an innocent girl. "I see right through you and you think that because Shayna is an easy target you thought you could control. Well, guess what pal, you can't! Stand up… sit down…. Stand up… sit down…. Now who controls whom? I will go so hard on you there's no way you'll ever be a foster father again." He smirked and just to scare the guy he banged the table causing him to jump before he exited and looked at Finn. "Well, I feel better now. I'm going to go check on Olivia and Shayna. You going to be okay for now Finn?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine. Go check on your fiancée and Shayna…" Finn smiled at Elliott before going back to the processing room and knocked on the door before going into the Captain's office.
Medical Examiner's…
Elliot however went down to the Medical Examiner's Lab and knocked on the door. He waited until the door opened and he walked in and beckoned Olivia over to him. When she came out the doors, he pulled her flush against him kissing her in a heated manner. Hearing her moan a bit, he let go smiling sheepishly. "Sorry Liv, your kisses just make me feel better after dealing with people like that. I think I'm going to go through the paperwork and adopt Shayna though. I can't stand the thought of her being in the foster system anymore."
Olivia smiled at him, rolling her eyes. "Promise when we get home." She kissed his cheek, nodding in response to what he had said. "And the thought never actually occurred to you that we're getting married in 7 months and you should probably talk to me?" She shook her head, a smile still plastered on her face. "But hey, you know, I don't think it's a bad idea at all. The foster system sucks and Shayna's a good kid who needs a family. And we can give her that." Olivia said, taking Elliot's hand in her own and walking back into the lab.
Elliot grabbed her hand tugging her back a bit. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you upset. I just thought of it a short while ago. Just looking at his face got me so pissed that he could treat another human being like that. I swear he had no remorse written on his face, it made me sick. But yes when we get home we can have time to ourselves. Where is Shayna going to go though?"
Olivia smiled softly nodding at his apology, as she hadn't meant to get upset. She squeezed his hand before leaning up and kissing him. "C'mon, lets go tell Shay the good news. I'm sure she'll be thrilled since she confided in the both of us." Olivia turned and walked back in smiling softly as Shay put on her beat up clothes. "What's the verdict Melinda?" She bit her lip sitting in a chair and felt Elliot's hands on her shoulders.
"It's not good I'm afraid and I'd recommend taking her to a hospital to get situated a bit. Shay here has four broken ribs, and she has major bruising all over from being kicked I'd say. She needs to see a doctor and a dentist to get situated there. Other than that she is perfectly healthy." Melinda smiled softly at the soon to be married couple.
"Shay? We have some good news for you. Elliot and I are going to file the paperwork to formally adopt you as ours because we don't want something to happen like this again. Until the paperwork is officially filed, you're staying with us until then."
Shay lit up and ran over to Elliot hugging him around the waist with tears of joy running down her face. "Thank you…" She smiled happily and just continued to hug him.
Olivia smiled at the sight, Shayna hugging Elliot warmed the harden detective's heart. She had seen him with kids before, he was great with kids, and this...This just made Olivia love him a little bit more. Even though she was pretty sure it wasn't possible to love him anymore. She already loved him so much. "Hey. Why don't we get you to the hospital so you can heal and then we'll get everything else figured out? How's that sound?" Olivia said, standing up from her chair.
"Oh..okay," Shayna whispered, her eyebrows furrowing at the idea of going the hospital. She hadn't actually seen a doctor in ages, and that only scared the 16-year-old more.
Elliot looked down at Shayna and saw an expression he had seen countless times before and he bent down looking at Shayna. "Shayna, it will be fine I promise. I won't leave you and neither will Olivia. But you need to have this done because we want to make sure you're healthy."
Hearing Elliot say that, Shayna nodded her head and smiled softly. "Okay, as long as I don't have to be alone. I'm scared and that's something I never would have admitted before. I feel safe with you though…."
Elliot's heart swelled when he heard that and he looked at Olivia. He hadn't thought about it in a long time and although he and Kathy were divorced, they agreed to let their children see him every other weekend. He'd have to tell them about Shayna so they wouldn't be surprised when she suddenly popped up. He smiled at Olivia kissing her softly before they all walked upstairs together.
Shayna smiled more than she had in years it seemed. Upon seeing Finn she grinned letting go of Elliot's hand and running as best she could with the bruising she had towards Finn. "Finn…. Finn!" She grinned wider when she saw him turn and open his arms to catch her giving her a gentle hug. She tapped his back so he could let her down, "I've missed you and I'm sorry I couldn't get down here more often."
"It's alright Shay, I'm just sorry you were placed under my brother's care. I constantly told him that he'd get in trouble one of these days. I'm just glad you had the sense to run here instead of staying." Finn smiled before kissing the top of her head in an affectionate manner. He looked up seeing Elliot and Olivia giving him matching quizzical looks. "Sorry that I never told you guys Shay is my niece. I couldn't say anything because it would look like I wanted revenge on my brother. I had to let her come here on her own, but if you decide to adopt her, I'll sign the papers so they won't try and put her under my care."
Fifteen minutes later, Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center…
They had gotten Shay set up in her room, doctors had come in and x-rays had been scheduled. Just moments before they had come to take her to x-ray, Shay had looked at Olivia with a weak smile on her face. Olivia sensing something was wrong climbed in the bed next to the 16-year-old and pulled her into a hug. "Hey. What's wrong? Wanna talk about?" She didn't want to press for answers, but she also knew that she needed them, both as a detective and a mother.
"I guess it would be nice to finally tell someone…. Olivia I'm scared and I just want you guys here… please don't leave me…" She sniffled a bit as some tears rolled down her face and out of the corner of her eye she saw Elliot walk over and smile at her softly. "I guess after being with him, I'm just scared. I don't want to be though… Wish I wasn't such a coward…"
Hearing this Elliot clenched his hands into fists suppressing his anger and breathed slowly counting backward from ten not wanting to scare Shay any more than she already was. He leaned forward lifting her chin so she could look at him. "Shayna there is nothing wrong with being scared after what he did to you. I promise you that you don't have to be scared anymore and if you like, once we formally adopt you, I can look into some self-defense classes so you can learn how to protect yourself."
Shay nodded before wiping her tears away. "Thanks, Elliot, but um I should probably tell you my full name. My full name is Dove Arianna Shayna Bordeau. I just go by Shayna because people used to make fun of my real name." She bit her lip tensing up a bit when she saw the doctor come back in.
Elliot nodded at the mention of Shayna's real name. He noticed how she tensed and he placed a hand of her shoulder. "Tell you what. I'll go with you to x-ray but I'll have to wait outside okay?" He said, helping her into the wheelchair that a nurse had waiting next to the bed.
"Thanks, Elliot…" Shay smiled as he helped her to sit in the wheelchair and smiled softly as the doctor rolled her into the room and she glared when they tried to help her up. "Don't touch me!" She looked at them angrily and her face turned from an angry expression when Elliot whispered in her ear. "But Elliot…."
"No buts Shay. They need to do these and you have to let them do their job. Please be nice to them." Elliot looked at her with a firm expression knowing if he wasn't everything would go into sheer chaos. Seeing her nod, he kissed the top of her head before exiting and sat beside Olivia and felt her kiss his cheek. "What was that for?"
"Mainly because I love you, but also because of how well you handled your anger before and how much of a father you were to her just now. I won't live with you for seven more months, but I would like some alone time with you tonight. Can you manage that?" She sat back in her chair waiting for Shay and the doctor with the results. She perked up seeing the door open, "What's the verdict?"
The doctor looked at Olivia and Elliot, a concerned look on his face that neither liked. The doctor gave a small smile before actually talking. "So. Shayna has extreme internal bruising, 4 broken ribs, several fractures that are already healing and bones in her right leg are broken so we'll need to set them and put her in a cast so it heals properly. I'd like to keep for at least a couple days just to get her settled and see what we can do for the fractures that are healing."
Olivia nodded in understanding and looked at Elliot who had clenched his hands into fists. She placed a hand on his shoulder in hopes to remind him that everything was going to be okay, even though at the moment it seemed like the world was crashing in on them. "Okay. Can we see Shay now?" Olivia asked, just wanting to see Shayna.
"Yes, she actually asked to see the both of you when I was finished the x-rays. If you help her into the wheelchair and follow me we can work on the cast bit. We need to break her bones to set them properly before putting her leg into a cast. I'll show you the x-ray once we get there." The doctor smiled softly not knowing what happened with Shay, but knew she was in good hands now.
Olivia smiled softly and stood up taking Elliot's hand squeezing softly to get him to relinquish his anger. "El, I know you're upset at her former foster father, but you need to contain your anger in front of Shay." She walked into the room smiling at Shay, "Shay? They said it's not good and we'll be with you, but they said because your right leg has broken bones that never healed properly they need to rebreak them to set them right before putting your leg in a cast. Will you be brave when we go in there?"
"Of course Olivia, I actually learned to be brave from you two actually. It kind of inspired me to want to be a detective someday. I want to protect others from getting hurt like I have." She lifted her arms as Elliot came over and lifted her into the wheelchair before rolling her down to the room where she had to have a few bones broken. "Elliot? Can you hold me still when they do this? I feel like I'll move too much when they try to break my bones and I just want to get better…" She looked up at Elliot biting her lower lip.
"Of course Shay, I would do the same thing if this happened to any of my other children." Elliot reached the room and helped her to get on the table. He stood behind her wrapping his arms around her to hold her still as the doctor came over and broke her bones. Hearing her scream, he actually began to cry hearing and seeing her in so much pain. "Shh, Shay it'll be over soon…." He watched as the doctor finished and began to put her leg in a cast and he kissed the top of her head. He released her before helping her into the wheelchair and rolled her back to the room she had been assigned to and put her in the bed. "Shay we can't stay all night because of work, but we can visit you soon. Would you like me to see if any of my kids can come by to keep you company?" Seeing her nod, he smiled softly kissing the top of her head again. "You were a brave girl and I have no doubt that you'll make for one hell of a cop." He took Olivia's hand and walked out as some nurses came in and they went down to their car.
