She had tried everything, only to be faced with one failure after another. When the anger and frustration became too much, Hermione Granger finally laid herself across her fallen professor's body. The scent of his blood surrounded her, as heart-wrenching to her as the failing thrum of his heartbeat. It fluttered weakly, but only just, creating a haunting sound as the diagnostic spell she had cast earlier kept it amplified. As her tears finally slipped through her tightly closed eyes, Hermione weakly pounded her fist against Severus Snape's chest.

"This wasn't how it was supposed to go," she whispered bitterly, unable to lift her face from his blood and tear-soaked robes. Instead, she hit her hands against him as she cried, as though the force of her own pain could save the man. He deserved better than this for all he did, and yet the death the fates had handed him was this; left to bleed out on the dusty floor of this decrepit shack. Reluctantly, Hermione pulled herself away, curling into a sitting position beside the unmoving form. She could almost feel the life leaving his body, and held back the sob that attempted to tear from her lips.

When she finally spoke aloud, her voice was weak and raspy through her tears. "Please," was all she said, before being silenced by the hand that suddenly pressed gently against her shoulder. Turning to look over her shoulder, she dashed the back of her hand over her swollen eyes as she met the eyes of the newcomer. Neither of them spoke as he held out one hand, providing a small nod in response to the question in her mind.

I'll keep you alive if you show me the way...

"Hermione?" His voice was the last thing she heard, rasping her name as she was led out the door. Only Death's stern hand on her shoulder kept her from turning back to say goodbye.
