FINAL FANTASY 13: The Battle Within
Prologue: Distraught
"Our world is not something that any one person could understand. In order to survive against the sky serpents, we must call upon the beast and destroy the vipers nest as told to us by our fal'Cie. Do you understand me child?" the chief said to me that the day before we departed when I asked about this war. No matter how many times or how I ask it, he would always give me the same explanation. Afterwards, I would take a walk across the path leading to the lake for some time to think about what will happen tomorrow.
Squatting down in the sand, I pick up a nearby stick and start drawing doodles to clear my head. No matter how many days pass, I still can't get the image out of my head. The image was but a monster running around and a single sentence. "Become Ragnarok…and bring about the end of Cocoon" I said to myself over and over to try and understand my focus. Moving some of my red hair out of the way, I look to see what my hand was drawing. It was the same monster that appeared in my focus. Not wanting to see it, I run my hand through the sand and erase it.
'Why…why do we have to…?' I thought before being interrupted from my train of thought. "Yo, Vanille. Get off your bum and move, we got to get ready" a voice yelled from over the railing above me. I looked behind to see an older woman with bronze skin and wavy dark brown hair with a braid behind her left ear. Trying to cover up my distressed face, I put on a smile and wave back to her. "Hey Fang. Sorry about that, I'll be right there" I said in the most energetic voice that I could to at least not have Fang worry about me. I thought I saw her eye twitch for just a second, but she only nodded and went back to prepare for the assault.
Once I could no longer see Fang, I allowed my hand drop to my side and let out a long sigh. Looking down, I could see the edge of my l'Cie mark sticking out. Running my hand across it, I began to think of every one before me who had been branded and either been turned to crystal or become Cie'th. I began to shake from the memory of when the entire village began to destroy a child who had just turned into a Cie'th for forgetting his focus. *Beep…Beep…Beeeeep* I could hear from in front of me. Looking at where the noise came from, I saw a little toy robot rubbing against my leg. "Oh! Bhakti" I yelled while picking the square bot off the ground. "Did you come all the way out here just to cheer me up? You really are a good friend" I said while patting it on the head.
Bhakti made some more beeping sounds before I put him back on the ground. He jumped a few times and began to make its way back up the hill. I cast my gaze to the sky and stared at the destination of where our next assault will be; the nest of Lindzei, Cocoon. "I wonder…if I can complete my focus…will I be able to at least protect those I care for" I said in a whisper that not even the wind could catch. Looking at Cocoon for several more minutes, I got up and made my way to where Fang was to prepare for tomorrow.
This would be the last time that I would ever see the faces of everyone in Oerba. I shall bear the sin of the actions that I have taken. Forgive me. Please forgive me.
