Such a war couldn't possibly feel finished. The soldiers that served knew that, no matter how many times celebrations were held to relish in the fact they had won, the horrors were inevitable and nightmares were imminent.
Because, really, they couldn't deal with being praised. Too many had died, too many had been sent out like little toy soldiers and thrown away like pieces of a chessboard – simply moved around so that the game could be won. Thousands had died, some of the worst ways imaginable, yet they wouldn't be able to witness the result they gave their lives up for.
Some of those who served would lock themselves away for days on end; refuse to sleep for hours and hours. Some would fall silent, too frightened to speak, to ashamed to voice their cowardly thoughts. Some would lash out, and yell and scream and howl. But all shared the same fear, tucked away in basements, curled in on themselves as the celebrations rattled above their heads. No matter how many times they washed their hands, the commander and his tacticians would never remove the crimson stains they imagined there. They threw away so many lives, fuelled only by anger and wonder and that tiny flicker of hope. Yes, the result was beautiful, but really, was the reward worth the loss – which was too large to comprehend.
The Scouting Legion, most of it was dead and gone or mauled in pieces, but most of the rest disbanded and cowered with what little family and friends they had left. Only a few were left after that, and they had once had a dream of seeing the outside world, but their exhaustion got the better of their judgement. Only the memory of the ones that were lost would push them from the safety of their houses towards the ocean, which roared and heaved like their enemies. Their feet sunk into the soft sand, and it reminded them of the ashes from the infernos that plagued the towns. The ocean was indeed, quite beautiful and unendingly huge. They found the ocean did, in fact, end, no matter how large it seemed at first. Of course, they should've guessed. Such a fact was ground into their minds like a sharp beam of light, burnt into the backs of their eyes. Nothing could possibly last forever.
The outside world, it was as beautiful as described. Wider and taller than what could possibly be imagined. But, it wasn't the same now that their trio was only down to two.
A/N - This is so short ^^' I'm not going to specifically mention which of the trio died, and I'm sure many of you can make a speculated guess.
