Regrets. They come at you when you least expect them, nibbling at your subconscious, summoning memories you thought you'd buried long before. So far, your list of regrets is much longer than you would like. Things you wish you hadn't done, things you wish you had done. Although, there's that one, the one regret that makes all the others pale in comparison. Sure, you've made your mistakes, everyone does. And you'll make more; there's still many years of living ahead of you.
But that one regret, it still haunts you. And, you wonder, will there ever be hope? You don't think so. Too many years have come and gone, flying past you like a speeding death glider. You stand in the dust and wonder what happened to the time, what happened to your life. You look back, and suddenly, you feel very old. Life has been hard. Years of torture at the hands of the enemy, countless injuries, it takes its toll on a person. No matter how strong you are; you'll eventually break down.
It's crazy, you walk through your life, existing. Granted, it's no dull existence. Many people would envy you, your job, the wonderful and amazing things you see and do on a daily basis. But the fact is, you don't envy yourself. Sure, this place made even your wildest dreams come true, you not only made it into space, but you've walked on other planets! And nothing on earth could possibly compare to the rush of walking through the shimmering event horizon to discover new worlds and new peoples.
Are you happy? You would think you would be—you should be. You're off to another briefing, another mission, another exciting and dangerous adventure. He's by your side as you step through the glistening event horizon, he's there as you flee your attackers, and he's there as you return home to a weeks stay in the infirmary.
No, you're not happy, not really. Not yet.
