Chapter 1: I've Made A Huge Mistake

Kagome

"Well, do you have everything packed?" Sango scanned the room full of clothes, colors strewn in all four corners. She tugged the zipper of her luggage, which she noted was definitely humongous and unrecognizable.

"Yeeees. I'm ready." Kagome said, mostly to convince herself. She has never travelled by herself before; scratch that, she has never travelled outside New York city before, period. She paced the floor before reaching for her bag. "My phone is fully charged, I've got the map of the city in my bag, my passport is here, and my heart, my heart is racing but it's fine, I'm fully intact." She gave her a weak smile before saying "FUCK!" when she stepped on a phone charger hiding beneath cotton. It hurt.

"Awww... Kaggie, call me when you get there, okay? Who knows, maybe your soulmate is living in the other side of the world." the dojo master insinuated with a wink before going serious. "He better not hurt you or I will beat him to a pulp."

"Will you please stop that. I am never getting married, at least not right now. I'm a wreck as it is." Kagome glared at her friend of twenty-three human life years. Souta will be going to university next year. Her mother, who works as a house cleaner, is getting older each day and quite honestly, she should retire soon. And her huge debt in pursuit of her law degree is weighing heavily on Kagome's shoulders.

"I can see that." Sango quipped, pointedly looking at her and her room. "How long are you supposed to be gone again?"

"Just a month, I barely had the money to go on this trip. Plus, Kikyou only agreed because I begged and begged, saying I'll take more cases and work overtime." Kagome twiddled her fingers.

"What do you mean? You already live in your office! And you hate that job."

"I don't hate my job, If you must know, I am one of her firm's most trusted and top lawyers, workload is inevitable." Kagome wrinkled her nose and gave a rueful smile. "It pays the bills. Besides, I really owe Kikyou everything. She was my mentor in school, she helped pay for my tuition and she secured me a job right after graduation."

"You mean, she somehow convinced you to do something you hate, for the rest of your life." Sango raised her brow.

"No." Kagome shook her head. " I followed what I know I needed to do. Becoming a writer carries too much financial risk for someone who have mouths to feed. Besides, I can still write... once in a while." She shrugged. "Mama is worried about Gramps being in the hospital on his own. She was going to go but I volunteered instead because I plan to convince Gramps to come back with me and sell the shrine." She said with resolve in her eyes.

That evening, she left with her heart tucked, secured and hidden, safe from the woes of the world. Or so she thought.

Inuyasha

"Yash, make sure to call me when you land in Japan." Desperate tone from Miroku's voice put Inuyasha on edge. He looked around for any suspicious face or actions from the airport crowd. He can't believe this is actually getting to him.

"Yeah, I got it." He turned off the phone. Miroku argued that this trip is an inconvenience at best and an actual life extension at worst. Inuyasha Taisho begs to differ. To him, this is running away and is against his life code. But he'll follow for now, for his instinct tells him so. Some idiot will pay for disturbing his regular schedule.

"As if, they could do any damage." He grumbled as he exit the security and headed to his terminal.

A flash of light and a shutter came and gone, unnoticed.
