Guitar Lesson
"You really suck at this, you know that?"
"I'm sorry we can't all be as perfect as you, Rog."
Roger laughed and took the guitar from me. "'Cause my life's so perfect, huh?"
"Hot new girlfriend, adoring fans. Yep. Where can I sign up?"
He bent his head over the fender and strummed a string. "Okay, for the last time. This is an A."
"Like April?" I teased.
"Yeah. A for April."
I reached over and took the guitar. I plucked the string and let the note reverberate through the air.
"Good. Now what about, Maureen?"
My hands jerked on the strings sounding a chilling chord. "Wh… what about her?" even to my ears my voice sounded high and panicky.
Roger gave me the hello-I'm-being-a-nosy-asshole look. "Oh please, don't tell me you don't like her. All you do is check her out."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Every time she walks by you stare at her."
"That's because she's usually walking by naked in a towel, and, um, hello? Did you not notice that we have a half-naked lesbian walking around the loft!" My voice had risen so that by the last line I was yelling.
"Bisexual. Not lesbian. There's a world of a difference as you should know." Roger reached across and plucked another string. "That's a G and you need to stop being so uptight. You're a bad liar. Hell, even Benny's stopped sucking face with Allison enough to realize it."
"I do not know why you guys are assuming I like Maureen."
"Because you do so shut up."
I strummed a chord and rested my cheek against the smooth grain of the guitar. "So what." I whispered softly.
