Her heart skipped a beat when Jack mentioned his name, it was a series of good memories tinged with anger that came flooding back. He'd been her first proper relationship and her last as well, she'd been 23 when she'd met him as a newly qualified police officer. Immediately she'd fallen head over heels in love with him, she'd been convinced that they'd be together forever, it was when it'd ended that she'd decided she was done with the whole love thing. The name that brought it all back was Gerry Standing, she could have waited her entire life to even hear that name again and now he was coming in for an interview to join UCOS.
Sandra had been just into the force and was in uniform when she'd met Gerry. He'd been working in the same station that she was based in, only different departments, they'd both been working late when they met in the police canteen and it hadn't been long before work was the last thing on their minds and they were back at Sandra's small flat. They were together 4 months when the truth came out, those four months had been damn near perfect and seemed to be good to be true, only it was. Gerry was already married.
"Sandra?" He's brought me back to reality from my day dreaming and I'm not sure I like it as I can now see Gerry thought the window in the door. "He's here."
"Yeah okay, bring him in." I tell him knowing that at some point I'm going to have to face him.
It's over and all I can say is thank God, he showed absolutely no sign of remembering me and that hurts. At one point he meant the world to me and now he doesn't even know who I am. He was the last interview of the day so I'm going to have to pull myself together to form a team that doesn't include him because then I'd have no chance of ever concentrating on work again.
"I think you should have Gerry Standing on the team." Jack's telling me and this is exactly what wasn't meant to happen, today just isn't my day.
"You are joking?!"
"No, he's a good copper and that's what we need on the team." How can I argue with that without telling Jack about the 80s? I know I've lost this argument.
"Fine."
