My first fic in a loooong time. I couldn't resist.
What else are you supposed to do during health class?
Sunlight, deep, even sunlight, glittered like gold on the beach of the island, tingeing the evening with a dusty orange, brushing the sand with just a touch of pink. The ocean sparkled at the tips of its dull, softly rolling crests, paying tribute to its beach through tides, tides that placed loving hands upon the sandy prints that flawed its surface, and carried them away. This last summer evening was like no other, but it was nothing compared to the Star.
The Star lay comfortably in the sand reflecting the golden sunlight, until a small hand closed over it. Sora looked at the Star in wonder---he had seen and admired this object from afar, and for as long as he could remember. He could spend hours just looking up at such a star, and quite surely had. But looking at it was one thing. Holding one was different. When it had been hanging in the air it seemed so much larger, but in this reality it was tiny enough to fit within his palm. The Star was cool to the touch, and smooth, smoother than anything he had ever felt before. Sora thought he wouldn't have recognized the Star for what it was, except for the delicate glow it still held.
"What's it like?" Sora handed the Star to the little girl beside him, who took it eagerly, eyes lit up with the prize of their childhood.
"What do you think it tastes like?" Sora asked her, mouth watering at the thought of tasting their Star. Kairi looked at him, bright with anticipation.
"Can we really eat this?"
"Riku has."
He wouldn't mention the many times he had Riku talking about the times he had eaten them. He was bigger, of course, and could therefore get hold of a Star whenever he pleased. He bragged of its sweetness and inexpressible texture, which was always "Like something I can't describe". And he would eat it all.
Sora had always been jealous of how Riku could always have such a treat while he couldn't. But it was okay now. With Kairi's help, he had briefly become taller, just tall enough to reach his treasure before crashing back down to the ground. "Let's try it then...we can split it!"
Kairi gave the Star back to Sora, who ripped it carefully. It broke into perfect halves, edges straight and unmarred, as if it was meant to be that way. In the last evening glimmer of light, the children shared their Star.
It was like something he couldn't describe---bitter and salty and sour all in one. But above all he could taste a rich and endless sweet. He savored the taste long after the Star was gone. There was no discussion, no giggly praise of their Star or anything like it. A smile was all.
