There's a quote in the new Torchwood: Children of Earth trailer on the official BBC website that made me laugh out loud, quite literally, so I based this little thing around it. I really can't wait for the new series; it looks awesome.
Woman: "What sort of civil servants are you?"
Ianto: "Unappreciated ones."
Ianto sat on the bench and sighed. It had been a long day; a long few days in fact and he was grateful for even a few moments rest. He buried his face, scratched and dirty, in his hands. It was the first time he'd been back in London since Canary Wharf, and he could see the tall building in the distance. He felt alone, when more than ever he needed his colleagues. Where were Jack and Gwen?
A dark-haired woman walked over, and Ianto looked up. It wasn't Gwen, however. Ianto recognised the woman as Emma, the receptionist who'd helped the team ever since they'd arrived in London. He'd told her he worked as a civil servant; after all, it wasn't too far from the truth.
"Good day?" She asked.
Ianto shrugged. "Could've been better. Job drives you mad at times."
"What sort of civil servants are you?" Emma asked, sitting down beside him and remembering being introduced to Ianto's colleagues, Jack and Gwen, the previous evening. She'd found it odd that an American and two Welsh people worked together in London, but then again, she couldn't deny the capital's diversity.
"Unappreciated ones," Ianto replied nonchalantly.
"Tell me about it," Emma laughed. "When do we ever get appreciated by our bosses?"
Ianto was about to respond with mine appreciates me in the bedroom but decided against it. He wasn't in the mood to explain his sexuality to a near stranger, and anyway, his cover would be blown.
"Anyway," Emma said, standing up. "I was just going down the road to get some coffee. You coming?"
Ianto nodded and staggered to his feet. "Can't say no to coffee," he said, forcing a smile. "Even if it's not homemade."
