Introduction
When word broke out that the the Japanese and the Americans were now drawn into a conflict, the world held its breath to see how it would end. It happened so quickly that they didn't have time to think about what had just occurred. On the screen that flashed back at them, thousands of families, businesses and people from all over the world watched as hundreds of U.S. Marines and Japanese Defense Force soldiers dropped aboard Death Valley, Pravda and Kuromorimine. From the looks of the situation, many thought that the long conflict was now over. The United Nations formed a meeting in New York City to debate about handling the aftermath. However, both countries showed distrust towards one another.
The recordings of Ami Chouno firing at Drake and Shiho's innocent verdict in the UN Court Session had fueled more controversy. Across many of the states on the West Coast of the United States, American citizens had started riots and organized rallies to go to war for a second time with Japan. Even though most of these incidents have been contained, it still managed to reach the nations capital. This caused the US Government to deliberate about their relationship with the Japanese and wonder if breaking the trust was a wise enough decision.
In the months following this, another global conflict broke out in Asia. North Korea had successfully attacked the borders at the DMZ and had infiltrated South Korea. Fearing the future, South Korean, Chinese and Russian troops stormed across the global stretch to deal with the threatened nation. This caused problems all around the world and further causing conflict for Japan. During this time, the United States had decided to halt all trade with Japan, hurting their economy and their military surplus.
Like what happened in the Second World War, the Japanese Government refused to allow this to happen. Instead of dealing with the United States themselves like before, they reached across the East China Sea to their neighboring empire, to see if they would get a response. Unfortunately, the Chinese refused to give in to Japans demands and told them to ask for assistance from other nations throughout Asia.
Moreover, this intensified the conflict between America and Japan. Because of the problems in Korea and their distrust of the United States of America, the island nation realized that they were in deep trouble. With no other options, they decided to ask America for acceptance. Thankfully for them, the U.S. agreed to a compromise. The anti-trade movement in the United States had caused all Japanese trading and shipment vessels at the American West Coast to turn back, but in the northern reaches of the country, Alaska had opened two ports for free trade with Japan. One of these ports were located in the port of Nome, while the other was located at Dillingham.
Meanwhile, other problems were beginning to sprout up at sea. It had been months since many of Japan's sea carriers were able to receive a full resupply from the mainland, due to the fear of North Korean infiltration. As a result, some of their primary resources were nearly depleted deplete, including fuel and sanitation products. Food was in no short of supply, but some of it had begun to spoil because of a supposed bug going around. To add up to all of the problems, some of the large machinery parts within the vessels required certain repairs that cannot be done out at sea.
With the situation growing tense everyday and with new problems sparking out of nowhere, five well known school carriers make their way across the Pacific Ocean towards Nome and Dillingham, two major port towns in Alaska, bordering the land of the midnight sun. On the other hand, little did they know, that this trip will be the tipping point of the Japanese American Conflict, throwing the countries into a war that will change the way the two look at one another forever. All it would take now is one more misunderstanding...
TROUBLE ON THE HOMEFRONT 2 - LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN
A GIRLS UND PANZER COMMUNITY MADE STORY
RATED: FICTION T
Chapter 1 - The Eve of War
"Mayday! Mayday! Our ship is in bad condition and we need immediate assistance!"
Inside the main bridge of the all famous Saint Gloriana School Vessel, a girl was panicking over the radio. She was trying to get an answer from the four other school ships that were following them. Outside, the stormy weather caused visibility problems, as heavy rain and thick layers of clouds block the view of the ships bridge. Though they were safe from the sea below, it still didn't mean that the ship could have a sudden problem out of nowhere.
"Mayday! Mayday! I repeat, this is the Saint Gloriana Carrier calling out to any and all friendly school carriers."
Around this one girl, ten others were running around back and forth, frantically giving orders to each other, while tending to their own duties. The storm out at sea was causing problems for all the crew members in the bridge, who were trying their hardest to keep things under control. The problems were worse down in the lower levels, as freezing salt water had begun to fill some of the lowest compartments up with water. Even though the mighty vessel was far from sinking, the unattended breaches could cause huge problems later on.
"For the last time! This is the Saint Gloriana Girls High School Vessel calling out to any and all friendly school vessels!"
Finally, after a few seconds of white noise, a voice came across the line, "We read you, Gloriana. This is the main command center aboard Kuromorimine Girls High School receiving your distress call."
"Right. Report your current position."
"That's a negative, over." said the other girl in return, "We have lost connection to the main coordination server."
The Saint Gloriana Radio Transmitter went out a second later, cutting off all communication with the other ships. Some of the girls in the bridge began to panic when they saw a light labeled Main Transmission Connection go out, following with the sound of static over the intercom.
Far below the main bridge, the city was quiet, with the occasional sound of wind sweeping through the rain covered streets. Most of the people were not expecting such bad weather to hit so quickly, but once more, they had underestimated the power of the Northern Arctic's extreme climates. Within the Education District of the school ship, the students were told to remain inside the buildings on campus, in case of a flash floods. Located within the schools grand and luxurious library, a blond haired girl stood alone looking over an array of different books on a shelf. Finally making up her mind on what book to choose, she slowly slid out a red book from within the selection. The book was on famous quotes written by Shakespeare, a book that this girl favors.
"Excellent." Darjeeling said to herself, "This will keep me entertained for weeks to come."
Once finished, she walked back to the table area of the enormous library. Sitting at a long vacant table were Darjeeling's two crew members, Orange Pekoe and Assam. The two were sitting together, quietly exchanging quiet complements to one another. When the two noticed their Commanders return, they picked a spot for her to sit at.
"How thoughtful of you two." Darjeeling commented with a warm smile.
The others smiled back and returned to their own books that they were currently reading to themselves. The only sound that filled the library afterwards was the sound of the fire flickering in the fireplace. After what seemed like a long time, Orange Pekoe turned to her commander.
"Suppose you know how far we are now from these free ports, Darjeeling-san?" she asked.
"I'm afraid that I don't, but I'm sure that we aren't far from them now." she said.
"Perhaps, another days travel east?"
Darjeeling thought to herself for a moment.
"Maybe a days travel or a day in a half." she predicted, "This weather is not helping those of us on board either."
"Right. The weather is quite nasty." Orange Pekoe commented.
"With the right precautions, we shouldn't be affected too much by it." Darjeeling replied.
The atmosphere that was held within the library corridors was heavily and somewhat cozy. In the shadows, the nation of Japan's flag hung above a long bookcase that stretched almost across one side of the library. It wasn't before long before Orange Pekoe broke the silence once again.
"I hope that nothing interferes with our business in America, Darjeeling-san."
"I'm sure that nothing serious will happen to us that."
"Nothing bad will happen, Pekoe-san." said Assam.
"What if something were to go completely wrong when we arrive in American Territory?"
"Do you know this saying, "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt it?"
"Shakespeare, I think?" Orange Pekoe guessed.
Darjeeling showed her friend the cover of the large book she was reading. The two turned towards her and smiled with satisfaction. A couple of miles ahead of the Saint Gloriana School Vessel was Pravda Girls High School Vessel. Unlike their allies, they appeared to be having a tougher time keeping themselves on course. Within the carriers school facility, Katyusha stood by the window and watched as the rain tapped against the wet window panes. In dissatisfaction, she began to pace around the large open chamber that she was standing in. Katyusha walked towards a large portrait on the wall near the exit. It was of Pravda High's flag, glowing red with pride above a candle lit table. The short leader heard a soft knock on the door near her.
"Hai?"
"Comrade Katyusha? May I come in?" asked a voice from the other side of the door.
"If you must." Katyusha replied short of patience.
Through the door came Nonna, the Vice-Captain of Pravda Highs Tankery Team. In one of her hands, she was holding a copy of the Pravda Paper; something that has been opposed by many only a few months earlier. On the first front page was an article that discussed the open free American ports in Alaska to the Japanese people.
"What about it?"
"We have predicted that we are about a days travel from the United States." said Nonna, "I felt that I should inform you on this."
"Right. We must prepare our vehicles before we reach Nome."
"Should I inform the others-"
"What do you think?" Katyusha interrupted, "We must have all of our tanks ready before we land. I will not tolerate embarrassment in front of the other schools because of our lack of discipline."
"Yes, I understand." Nonna returned.
With curiosity, Katyusha snatched the Pravda Paper out of Nonna's hands and began to read it to herself. The taller girl took this as her cue to leave. When she was about to step back out into the hall the squeaky voice of the Team Captain was heard again, calling her back.
"What about the storm? I received a message back in the dormitories that a large sector of campus has no power."
Nonna turned back to Katyusha, "We could only hope for the best. The higher we go, the more severe the weather is going to get."
"I can't imagine those who live in this kind of climate." Katyusha added.
"Oh, we have seen worse. I suppose that the storm will blow over by morning."
In the very back end of the five school vessel fleet, Anzio was falling behind the pack in the typhoon. Word has reached to the others that water was beginning to fill up slowly in their operating bays far below deck. From outside her window, Anchovy watched as girls in the nearby square scramble to gather up all their cooking supplies from their stands and run back to the dorms in the rain. From behind her, Carpaccio came through the door carrying an umbrella.
"Duce, we managed to get most of the gear out of the storm." she said.
"Its not the storm that I'm afraid of, I'm more worried about whats happening below decks."
Carpaccio sighed, "I'm sure that nothing horrible will happen to us while we are traveling. After all, these carriers are humongous."
"Just because we are on a large vessel dosen't mean that we could be swept off." Anchovy said nervously.
"I understand your concerns completely, Duce. I would fear the same." Carpaccio returned.
A second later, Pepperoni came rushing through the hall and stopped in front of Anchovy and Carpaccio. She was soaking wet and dripping with water. Still wearing her toque on her head, she lifted it off of her hair and groaned as drops or precipitation began to travel down her face.
"My wonderful stand is getting pounded out there. Why couldn't we go another way?"
"It's the route that our government told us to travel by. I think its because we don't want to interfere with the Americans." said Anchovy.
Pepperoni groaned again, "Well, you've got a point. Especially after what happened with-"
"Hush." Anchovy whispered, "I don't want to attract attention."
The other two agreed. With that being said, they prepared to go on there own way. Anchovy, on the other hand, was not finished yet. She called her Vice Captain back to her.
"Is there something wrong, Duce?" she asked.
"Yes. I have a bad feeling that the American trading ports are some sort of traps. What if these people become hostile towards our presence?" Anchovy wondered aloud.
"Are you still worried about The Incident?" Carpaccio asked.
"Even now, I still ask myself if we ever need to fire back at them. We might need an armored escort once we reach land."
"Duce, why are you worrying yourself so much over this incident?"
"Why not? Everything that we have heard about these people is no good. They have stopped trade with our country and now they might have a trap set up for us in this Alaska that they speak of."
Carpaccio grew quiet when she heard this. Thinking about it no more, she departed from Anchovy presence while saying, "We must have faith that things will go over well."
Aboard Saunders University High, Kay was standing in line at the schools cafeteria. She was tired after a long day of practice and she needed something sugary to wake herself up. While deciding whether or not to choose hot chocolate, tea or coffee, she heard a familiar voice from behind her.
"Hello, Captain."
"Alisa!" Kay greeted with excitement, "I thought that you were sick!"
"Sorta." Alisa sniffed, "Only my nose is giving trouble now. Sorry that I couldn't show up for practice today."
Kay gave her teammate a friendly wink, "No problem. I would rather have you in better health rather than dragging behind because of a bad case of the cold."
"I would do the same if it was you." Alisa returned.
The brown haired girl waited until her leader bought her drink. Surprised to see that Kay had bought her something as well, she followed her Captain to a vacant table. Immediately, Kay began to chatter.
"Tomorrow is the best day of my life! The day when I actually set foot in the country that our school is so proud of."
"I'm looking forward to it. I need to ask you a question, though."
Kay paused from her cheerful attitude to acknowledge Alisa's question.
"Have you ever thought that the Americans that you have been talking about are going to be friendly towards us or not?"
Naomi, who also happened to be nearby, sat down beside them, "If you want to hear my opinion, I'd say that they might become hostile towards our presence."
Kay's facial expression changed, "Don't be so negative about it. These people might understand that we need help and might help us anyways."
Naomi turned towards her captain, "Think about it, though. Our two countries are in a huge conflict at the moment, so perhaps, they might view us as the enemy."
"I agree." Alisa replied, "However, they might as well mind their own business and leave us alone while we handle ours."
"I'm sure that as long as we don't bother them, they shouldn't bother us." said Kay.
"Unless, of course, they decided to inspect our tanks."
"Well, as long as they aren't loaded and as long as they are shooting at anything, we should all get along just fine with each other."
Afterwards, the three finished their conversation and returned to their the darkened corridors of a dormitory building on Kuromorimine, Erika was standing near a window. She was troubled about something, but didn't have the heart to tell anyone about it.
"Erika?" said a voice from behind her.
Turning around, she came face to face with Maho Nishizumi, the Captain of Kuromorimine's Panzerkraft Team and the famous daughter of the Nishizumi Family.
"Are you worried about something?" she asked, "You have been acting strange all day. You appear to have a lack of energy and appetite."
"Listen, Kommandant. I'm still nervous about showing my face to the people of this nation. After everything that has happened, I'm not so sure that I will be safe outside."
Maho sighed, "Don't scare yourself because of this. I should be more worried than you are."
"What about you, Kommandant? Your name is famous to the point where others would accept the decisions that you make."
"In this day in age, my family name means nothing to these Americans. You must remember that we are not in Japan anymore."
"I understand." Erika said feeling a slight feeling of guilt creep onto her shoulders.
Maho silently moved towards the window where Erika was standing. The view gave way to one of the many courtyards that were within the Black Forest Peak campus, which appeared to become flooded with rainwater.
"The higher we go, the more likely we run into severe weather." Maho said.
"Just exactly where are we, Kommandant?"
Maho thought quietly to herself, "I checked with the bridge and they said that their radio transmitter is malfunctioning. The same is happening with our 'friends' at Saint Gloriana."
"So, we have no clue about where we are in the Pacific?" Erika wondered.
"The last beacon recognition was around the midway point between Northern Japan and American Territory. I suppose that we can't be far now."
"When we get there, I'll do my best to keep myself under control." Erika said as she turned away.
"Be sure to alert the rest of the team about our current position please, Erika."
She agreed and walked away, leaving Maho alone to think to herself. Outside, the rain was starting to fall down at a much harder and faster rate than before. Up on the bridge, members of the remote control sector were beginning to panic over a new problem. When a mighty gust of wind came through, it scrambled the communications reception line, cutting off all coms between them and the other four carriers. Before opening the bridges blast door to the side deck, one of the girls yelled to the members over the howling cold wind.
"Mayday! Mayday! We are off course. Heading into the storm once more."
A FEW HOURS LATER
Morning had finally arrived. The storm that had blown all night long had passed, taking with it the precision transmitters that some of the school ships needed to communicate. Across the general population of the enormous vessels, a thick layer of fog has settled over the rooftops, but business went on as usual. People opened their shops, girls went to school and everyone tended to their own important agendas.
Stepping onto a balcony outside of her room, Darjeeling's face felt the freezing polar winds blow on her face, slightly stinging her warm cheeks. She placed both of her hands around the hot teacup that she was grasping tightly with her fingers. Looking up to the sky, Darjeeling could make out a small patch of blue sky before it was shielded out by a thick white cloud of moisture that was passing slowly by. When she exhaled, the warmth of her breath floated through the morning air.
"Goodness." she said, "We have to be close by now."
Returning back inside from the freezer, she decided to go to her classes early to get a head start on the day. While walking through the halls, she ran into another student who was running in the opposite direction.
"Pardon me." Darjeeling apologized, "I didn't notice you around the corner."
"Finally, somebody to inform about the news." said the girl short of breath.
"Huh? What news might this be?"
"Urgent news from the main bridge! We have lost contact with the other school vessels!"
The Sensha-do Captain was shocked by the news. She knew that the vessels broadcasting transmitter was important and how it could affect them heavily if it wasn't repaired or located soon.
"Is there any distress signals coming from the other vessels?" Darjeeling asked.
"Nothing yet. The Bridge is a madhouse, so watch yourself if your travels take you there."
Then, the girl ran off to search for other people to tell the same information to. The situation on Saint Gloriana was not the only problem that was happening. At the same time, Anzio, Pravda, Saunders and Kuromorimine were suffering from problems of their own. On Anzio, the lower levels water flow had risen, causing flooding. Kuromorimine had problems in the mechanical pipes, causing immense pressure to build up and for some pipes to burst. Saunders, like Saint Gloriana, lost their main radio transmitter, resulting in communication failure and Pravda's fuel lines had apparently froze up during the night, not allowing fuel to flow through to many parts of the vessel. To add up to the problems that were there already, a dense layer of moisture has blocked the view for most of the ships.
"Terrible weather that we are having today." Orange Pekoe said looking out her window.
Most of the dormitory buildings were clouded out because of the fog, causing visibility to become poor. All of a sudden, the orange haired girl heard the sound of propellers coming closer. Leaning out of her window more, Pekoe could make out the shape of a helicopter. To be more precise, it was a Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 Drache; the one that belonged to Black Forest Peak.
"That's strange? What is Kuromorimine doing here for?"
From her spot at the window, she could make out shapes moving in the distance. Maho, Erika and another woman was walking towards the Administration Building. From her own perspective, Maho kept on eyeing her mother as she walked ahead of her.
"Maho. I need you and your Vice Captain to alert their Panzerkraft Team while I handle business."
"Yes, Ma' am." said both of the girls.
Upon returning to the lower levels, Darjeeling and her two assistance's ran into Maho and Erika. Stunned by each others appearance, the five stared blankly at one another for a few seconds.
"What brings you two here?" Darjeeling asked.
"We came along to alert you about the situation at hand. You are suppose to gather your tanks and head to the mainland to be resupplied."
The three girls stared uneasily into Erika's face, not knowing whether or not she was telling the truth.
"What about our vessel? Isn't that supposed to be resupplied first?" Orange Pekoe asked.
Darjeeling stepped in, "Wait, who told us that we have to send our crews to land first?"
"Orders." Maho said in her casual tone.
"Just be sure to round up your crews and get to land as soon as possible." Erika said walking away with her captain.
"What do you think we should do?" Orange Pekoe wondered.
"I say we should proceed with caution. Even though we have fought each other in some friendly matches in the past, I feel suspicious trusting anyone during times of conflict."
"Agreed." Assam quietly replied.
Even though they were extremely weary of following the two girls from Kuromorimines orders, they felt that they should continue anyways. After all, for all they know, they could already be at Dillingham or Nome and not know about it yet. The three pressed on and walked together to the main tank garages where the rest of the crews have already gathered. Following a brief announcement, the Saint Gloriana Sensha-do Team prepped themselves for a large cruiser, which would transport the teams to land.
"Duce?" Pepperoni stuttered, "This doesn't look like any of those ports that we are supposed to be at."
The Anzio Commander was correct. It didn't appear like any of the ports that they were assigned to go to. Instead, they were met with the view of distant fog covered mountains and far off tall buildings in the darkness of the early morning. Though the sight was majestic, something didn't feel right to the girls. It became obvious that this wasn't how Nome or Dillingham was described to the schools. The Italian themed school was not the only one who was heading for land. Around them, Saunders, Saint Gloriana, Kuromorimine and Pravda were along side them in similar cruisers. The closer they approached the dock areas, the more they felt nervous.
"In about less than five minutes, we are about to step foot on true American Soil!" Kay exclaimed with joy.
"Keep your eyes peeled. I might have a bad feeling about this." said Maho to the others over a radio line.
"Why is that? What could you be so worried about?" Katyusha wondered.
"According to our priority plans, we are supposed to announce our arrival to the Americans."
"And?" Katyusha added.
"Did anyone besides us manage to get a signal?" Anchovy asked.
The line was silent. The deep feeling of fear began to tighten within the main commanders stomachs. All at once, they realized that none of the Japanese School Vessels alerted the shore of their arrival. Forgetting that the mic for the radio line was still on, Alisa began to talk loudly to Kay while everyone else began to listen to their conversation.
"Hey, Cap. I checked the G.P.S. and it appears that we are at..."
"Where are we?" Erika bluttered out.
"We are at..."
"At where?" Katyusha snapped, "Come on, spit it out!"
"We are in...Anchorage..." Alisa followed with a nervous chuckle.
"ANCHORAGE!?" shouted all the commanders at once.
Just as they were about to turn back they arrived at the dock areas. There was a large crowd of people who were standing at the edge of the concrete pier, watching with awe as the girls approached the land as if they were from another planet. On top of that, the people on land were surprised that the girls on the transports, besides having tanks, were wearing short skirts up in Alaska for.
"Uhh...Hello?" Kay greeted while unsure about what to say next.
"What school are you girls from?" asked a young man in the front of the group.
Darjeeling came forward, "Well, sir. We have girls from Saint Glorianas, Saunders, Anzio, Pravda and Kuromorimine."
"Excuse me." Carpaccio asked to the crowd, "Is this Nome or Dillingham by any chance?"
The crowd looked at her with a look of confusion.
"No, your in Anchorage. Those cities are much higher north." said a woman.
"Hold up." interrupted another adult from the crowd, "How come you want to know if you are in Nome or Dillingham for. Plus, why did you bring your big tanks with you for?"
Maho cleared her throat, "I see that there is some sort of mistake here, sir. You see, we are suppose to replenish our supplies at these two ports but our signals are having problems, so we decided that we should get help here before moving on."
"Your Japanese?"
The girls were all quiet when they heard this. The crowd began to talk to one another for a while before turning their attention back to the landers.
"You do realize that you people are not allowed in our country." a person from the group sternly replied.
"Yes, but..."
"If I were you, I would best shift yourself around and go straight back the way you came before you stir yourselves up trouble."
"Oh, boy. Here we go again." Naomi groaned while blowing a bubble with the gum she was chewing on.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please let us explain something." Maho announced, "This appears to be some sort of misunderstanding. We need to make an emergency landing."
The people on the shore looked at the number of transporters in the bay and the schools ships that were floating in the distance of the morning lit river.
"Just look at these girls." replied a younger boy from the crowd, "My grandfather is a veteran and he said that this was how the Japanese invaded Attu back in forty-two."
Upon hearing this, a sudden guilt fell on Kay. She had come to be welcomed by her country of choice but rejected by a misunderstanding.
"It's okay, Captain." Alisa said placing a hand on Kay's shoulder.
Erika, who was beginning to grow irritated with the crowd, stepped forward, "Can't you people understand that we need help? Your acting as if you are going to shoot you."
Maho flashed her an annoyed glance.
"Of course we are!" returned one individual, "I don't think that Malamute High will be happy about this."
"Malamute High?" Anchovy asked.
"Hey, everybody!" shouted Katyusha on top of Nonna's shoulders, "I see a bunch of tanks coming our way!"
When the news had reached the shoreline spectators, three gray and white camouflaged tanks came rolling up towards the edge of the dock. They were accompanied by fifteen more who were waiting further behind. The citizens began to clear out once the three front tanks began to move forward.
"This is Malamute High, I assume?" Erika replied crossing her arms.
Suddenly, the top hatch of the closest tank, a grey and white snow patterned M26 Pershing popped open and a person wearing an odd hat, a pair of goggles and a white face cover appeared. Nobody could make out who this person was, but many of the girls guessed that it was someone very important. The individual removed the face cover and pressed a megaphone to their lips.
"Turn around and leave our port at once! You girls aren't welcome here."
All at once, they knew that it was what happened many months ago all over again. However, this was from the females perspective. If you want to know the truth, you will have to now read the events from boys point of view leading up to this moment.
The next big conflict is slowly unraveling before their very eyes...
