Beyond was crying. It wasn't because he was in jail. He had already spent a few years in jail so that didn't faze him. It was because he had found out the man he loved was going to die soon.
Beyond used to only know him as L and did not know it was him when they first met, but after the LA murders, Lawliet was so impressed by what he had heard of Beyond, that he visited him and asked him on a date which he could get Beyond out of prison for one day for. He had not told Beyond he was L, so Beyond did not know it was L. Beyond just knew him as Lawliet by the name floating over his head and Beyond didn't think L would ever do anything of the sort after what Beyond had done. Beyond thought Lawliet was cute and he figured he could use a break from prison, so he said yes.
The first date that they went on took place at the park. Lawliet had brought a picnic basket for them to share filled with jam and desserts. Needless to say, they had a great time. They just sat there talking about various things until the sun had set. Beyond thanked him for the wonderful time and Lawliet offered to see him again the next week. Beyond agreed to do so.
Their dating continued for quite a few months. One day, Lawliet finally confessed that he was L. Beyond didn't care. After a while of pondering his life when Beyond had free time in prison, he had come to the conclusion that L wasn't to blame for his traumatic childhood. Besides, Beyond had already figured out at that point that Lawliet was L and didn't care because he loved him so much.
When the current day had first started, Beyond had been really excited, because he was planning to propose to Lawliet. They would go to the park where they had had their first date. He would get down on his knees and pull out a ring that he had managed to get off the body of his previous cell mate who had died of a heart attack. Everything was going to be perfect! Then, L walked into Beyond's cell and Beyond saw the little numbers floating over his head. He only had a day left.
"Beyond, why do you look sad?" L asked.
"Your…." Beyond was couldn't finish his sentence because of the incredible despair and heartbreak.
"I'm what?"
"….nothing." Beyond couldn't bring himself to tell him. He wanted L to enjoy his last day alive. Despite the fact that the proposal was out of the question, he decided it would be a good idea to go to the park anyway. They sat there and watched the sunset. Beyond kept his feelings hidden well until L said
"Beyond…. I have never loved anyone as much as you." Beyond couldn't stand it anymore. He pulled L into a hug and kissed him. The kiss was passionate and sad at the same time. To Beyond, it felt like the kiss lasted forever. Beyond wanted it to. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with L. he never wanted to let go. They had to par for air, but Beyond was still holding L. eventually though, it had to end. L had to leave to go back to the Kira case and Beyond had to go back to jail. Beyond wanted to stop L from going. To stop him from walking into his death. But, Beyond knew better than anyone that it was impossible to stop the numbers from reaching zero. He had tried to stop his best friend A's death and had failed. Beyond felt helpless as he saw L walk off. The man he loved was going to die and there was nothing Beyond could do.
