The Wishing Well
Drowning.
One of the many ways people die, it is defined as a respiratory impairment from being in or under a liquid. It is thought to be quick and silent, due to the airway being closed off by the body's automatic responses. This makes it impossible for the person drowning to shout or call for help. The instinctive drowning response is the final set of autonomic reactions in the 20–60 seconds before sinking underwater, and to the untrained eye can look similar to calm safe behavior.
Survival rates depend strongly on the duration of immersion. Yet when the water is coaxing your body deeper into its depths time seems irrelevant. It may seem peaceful to the onlookers but inside your lungs are catching aflame. That is how I felt while sinking to my watery grave at the bottom of the wishing well staring up at my killer as I slowly felt myself burn from the inside. My name is Alison Carroll and this is just the beginning of my story.
