Author's Note: Just something I wrote a few months ago when I was bored. It was originally supposed to be the prologue to another story, but it went nowhere. Please R&R!

Water

Kya sat by the riverbank, with her pet penguin, Moji, just wasting the day away. She had practiced her waterbending for a bit, but had gotten bored rather quickly.

Earth

By necessity, she taught herself, since her family had moved to a small Earth Kingdom village from the Southern Water Tribe. And Moji was the only proof that penguins could survive outside of the South Pole.

Fire

The war had forced them to move. Since the Southern Water Tribe had so many small groups, Kya's family thought they might be the last.

Air

A group of kids playing a war game caught Kya's attention. Kya had once played war games with her Water Tribe friends.

Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony

But that was very long ago. During the time when Kya had friends, craved attention, took charge. During the time when she was four.

Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked

Everything had changed since then. Her friends had died in Fire Nation raids. Only three people had survived long enough for the Fire Nation to deem them harmless: Kya and her parents. No, four: Kya had forgotten Moji for a second.

Only the Avatar, master of all four elements could stop them

Kya used to have a brother, Xi Wang. A waterbending prodigy and a mad genius, he had been eight at the time. He decided to join the other waterbenders, the fool.

But when the world needed him most, he vanished

Xi Wang had realized that he wasn't prepared after about five seconds. He turned and ran from the battle to join his family. But he wasn't fast enough. The next morning, Kya woke up realizing that she would never see his face again, never hear him laugh. Since then, she had run out of tears, out of hope.

One hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar

Kya had heard rumors of the Avatar's return. But he was ten years too late to help Xi Wang.

An airbender named Aang

Not even an airbender could change everything that had already happened.

And although his airbending skills are great

Moji gave Kya a little nudge, breaking her from her train of thought. It had been a particularly negative train of thought.

He has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone

But the Avatar was still just one person against an entire nation.

But I believe Aang can save the world

Kya didn't believe that the Avatar could change much of anything. Even if he took out the Firelord, which would be great, there would always be someone to take his place, plus the entire Fire Nation army. Completely hopeless, Kya decided, completely and utterly hopeless. Kya gave the joyful children one last look, sighed, stood up, and walked home.
