If Zach Nichols ever had to, he would probably admit that there was only one subject about which he was completely knowledgeable. Or as knowledgeable as circumstance would allow.

Danny Ross.

He had known him for more than ten years, and even though for a good portion of those years he hadn't been around, he still prided himself on being the leading Danny Ross expert.

Who else knew how exactly Danny liked his coffee? (Two sugars, a teaspoon of cinnamon sugar and a squeeze of lemon.)

Or that he lead with his left foot when walking, not his right. That he was ambidextrous but not very good at it. It was impossible that anyone but him knew exactly where Danny had accidentally gotten a tattoo shortly after the two of them had become partners. It was a Star Of David, on the inside of his right hip. It was doubly impossible that anyone besides he knew the spot where Danny had gotten rid of of another tattoo via laser . The back of his neck, after I 'accidentally' got Danny drunk at that tattoo party. Or where he and Danny had first met. Gay Bar. Or why exactly Danny had what appeared to be permanent bruising on his lower back. The doorknob on Danny's apartment door. The exact spot behind Danny's left ear that cause near-orgasmic results if licked just the right way.

Zach believed himself to be the leading expert on Danny Ross.

It wasn't until he came back to New York did he realize that while he was away, someone else had claimed that title.

'People change,' was a statement Zach had heard often, but he had never thought it applied to Danny.
