Summary: A moment of passion has emotional consequences for Barney and Robin. Trio of drabbles from season seven

Disclaimer: I do not own HIMYM or anything vaguely related to it. This is my own what if imagining only.

The Key to Forever

They paid the cab driver, Barney tipping twice as much as the fare itself. They left the cab, Barney

giving Robin his hand to help her out, watching her long legs unfold as she stood on shaky feet.

Were they really going to do this? Past the doorman, through the first set of doors, Barney's key,

the second set of doors, the wait for the elevator. All that time, her hand in his, sweaty but never

wavering. So many checkpoints, so many chances to stop, to run back to safety, but here they

were, with his key in the lock.

Rose Petals and Candle Wax

Robin dragged herself home. Alone, despite Kevin's best efforts. She couldn't bring him here, not to

the room where she'd been locked in with Barney. That room would always be his, even if he never

set foot in it again. She couldn't blame him, not after what she'd done. Or didn't do. Stupid Kevin,

with his pretty words, his optimism, his rose colored glasses. Stupid Robin for letting them make a

difference. It wasn't Kevin she loved, and it wasn't Kevin who'd left her bedroom door open. Not

Kevin who'd been and gone, leaving only rose petals and candle wax.

The Shakes

She didn't mean no. She meant not yet. Barney had to believe that. He hadn't felt that excited and

terrified since he was a little kid on Christmas morning, but when Robin walked into MacLaren's, it

was Christmas, New Year's and Fourth of July all at the same time. Then Kevin came in behind her.

Tax day. Garbage day. A day that would be just no good, because he couldn't call her and hear

why she'd chosen Kevin over him. There wasn't enough Scotch in the world to get him through

something like that, and so it couldn't be true.
