Her field was a depressing sight. There were weeds everywhere, with rocks and branches tossed carelessly around the havoc.
Branches.
They reminded me of the accident.
"Shouldn't you be getting to bed? It's not safe for a lady to be out at night."
She grinned at me. "I'll be fine! I'm just going to collect some lumber."
I sighed. "Alright. Be careful."
She grinned at me again. "Okay."
Little did I know it was the last time I would ever see her smile.
Later…
"Vaughan!" Julia was shaking me awake frantically.
"It's Chelsea! Hurry! Follow me!"
I sprang out of bed and ran after her. She was running as fast as her boots could take her. I had a bad feeling in my stomach.
"Please Goddess, don't let anything bad happen to Chelsea…" I silently pleaded.
We soon arrived at Gannon's house on Sprout Island.
Inside, I could hear sobbing and yelling.
"What happen! Tell me Gannon!" A young, wild man was standing next to a sobbing Gannon. Gannon looked up at me.
"I'm s-so sorry Vaughan!" he blubbered.
"Just tell me what happened before you apologize!" I snapped.
"Chelsea… she's d-dead."
I stood there in shock. "What! How! Tell me!"
Gannon burst into tears again. "She w-was making lumber out of them b-branches and she tripped over a branch and fell on h-her axe she was holdin'! Shea h-here found her and brought her o-over teh me and… it was too late!"
I just stared at him. Julia, who was standing behind me the whole time, finally spoke. "Oh, Vaughan… I'm so sorry. Everything will be-"
I walked out. Sympathy was the last thing I wanted right now.
I couldn't believe it. She was here, saying she'd be careful, and the next… she was gone, just like that. We didn't even get to say goodbye. I never got to propose to her. I never got to tell her I loved her. It was too late.
And now it had been weeks then, since the accident. Chelsea's funeral was small and quiet. She wouldn't of wanted the whole island mourning over her. She was always so cheerful and kind. Her embrace was always warm, just like the sunset of which we shared our first kiss.
And now the sun was setting again behind me. I watched it… imagining Chelsea was here next to me all over again. Her laughs, smiles, and love where there with the sun.
"Chelsea," I whispered to the sun. "I love you."
