A psalm to be read in two voices alternating each line. A dash (–) indicates the beginning of a line; so 'Is the day, yes. (Pause.) THIS IS THE DAY...' is all said by one voice, the one that started. It's less complicated in practice than it is in theory.
– Today is the day
– Today.
– Today, this day: this is the day.
– Not tomorrow.
– No. What? No! Today, today is the day.
– But tomorrow
– Leave tomorrow till tomorrow. Here, today, now, this day.
– This day?
– Is the day, yes.
Pause.
THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HATH MADE.
– Today.
– Yes, today, today! It's not that hard.
Pause.
Today, I shall make pancakes.
– It's not Tuesday.
– No, it's not, that's right, it's not Tuesday and yet I shall make pancakes.
– Pancakes.
– Yes, pancakes, yes.
– Pancakes belong to Tuesday.
– No, well yes, yes they do
– Yes they do.
– But today, this day, I shall make pancakes despite.
– Despite?
– Despite it not being Tuesday. They make me glad.
– Tuesdays?
– No, pancakes. Pancakes make me glad and so today, this day, here, now, today: I shall make pancakes.
Pause.
WE SHALL REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT.
– And pancakes make us glad.
– They do.
– But still tomorrow
– Tomorrow, still tomorrow, always tomorrow with you! Here, today, now.
– But tomorrow
– Here! Today! Now! This day, this day today, here and now, rejoice and be glad.
– But tomorrow there will be silver.
– There will be silver.
– There will be thirty pieces of silver. Here? Today? Now? How, when there will be silver tomorrow?
Pause.
– Silver and nails.
– And nails, exactly yes, and nails.
Pause.
– Today there are palms. Palms and I shall make pancakes.
– Palms, pancakes, and praises. Rejoice and be glad?
– Rejoice and be glad! For palms and pancakes and praises. Today, this day: rejoice. Here and now: be glad.
– But tomorrow. Tomorrow there will be silver and tomorrow there will be nails.
– And the day after that!
– And the day after that?
– No, not yet. First there must be silver and nails.
– Silver and nails tomorrow.
– And tomorrow shall be today tomorrow. Tomorrow there will be silver. When there is silver, there, that day, then, that day shall be today.
– And nails, when there are nails, that day shall be today too.
– It's not that hard. Tomorrow, that day, there and then, shall be a day that the LORD hath made.
Pause.
– And we shall be rejoice and be glad in it?
– WE SHALL REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT.
Amen.
