This is my version of the invasion of earth. Stephenie Meyer owns The Host, I'm just trying to fill a plot hole. Let me know what you think.
Something was going on in the world. Nobody understood what it was, at first. It started out all the way across the world, in India and China mostly. I remember news reports that the crime rate dropped to zero almost overnight. Serial killers and rapists and child molesters, all sort of human monster just walked into police stations by the thousands, all saying that the urges of their bodies made them unfit to live within society, or something like that. They were "disposed of", and all other criminals were pardoned and released. All the prisons shut down. Hospitals became Miracle central: people who were blind, or in wheelchairs, or with all sorts of terrible diseases, walked out completely cured.
But there was more to it then that. People were different. The change in the personality was drastic enough that people told the media about it. Until they changed as well. It was like no one normal was left to complain about how strange everybody was. A lot of people were "disposed of", and not just the serial killers and child molesters. Doctors walked into hospital rooms and unplugged life support machines, or gave lethal injection to the patients in the psych ward. the families would make a scene, the doctor would take them to a private room, and five minutes later, they calmly walked out. It was like a speed-brain-wash.
The news stopped reporting it after a while, and it became clear why. But some people had noticed. As the phenomena spread, they tried to put a stop to it. All the biggest cities in the world were targeted, one by one: Moscow, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Tokyo. Those who saw what was coming resisted the only way they knew, with arms.
It was a bloodbath. The only way to know who was changed and who wasn't, aside from the obvious like the blind man who could suddenly see, was that the 'different' ones wore sunglasses all the time, and they had a scar, about two inches long, on the back of the neck. Anyone who wore sunglasses was shot on sight. Anyone who had long hair, or wore a turtleneck, and couldn't show their necks quickly enough, was killed as well. The police, then the army, was involved. And in the end, it did no good. People continued to change, and no one really knew how, or why.
The phenomena continued to spread. In America, in Europe, in Africa. Soon, it was all over the world. And that's when they revealed themselves for what they were. The aliens. Body snatching parasites who take over the human body and destroy the mind within. In a little under a decade, the invasion of Earth was complete. Humans went from rulers of the world to endangered specie.
It goes without saying that there weren't enough humans left to keep fighting. So they hid; in abandoned houses or huts, or even in caves. Wherever the conditions were the least hospitable, that was where the ''souls'', as they called themselves, were the least likely to be. So that was where what was left of humanity hid, as it was being tracked.
They knew, the invaders, that humans were beaten but not broken. That as long as humanity exist, they were a potential danger. That they were catching their breath, regrouping. Brute strength has failed, but humans also had cleverness. One day, they could find a way to get their planet back. One day, when the aliens are lulled into a false sense of security, they might do it.
