Life's Not Fair
Disclaimer: I don't own CSI, I'm just borrowing them.
Spoilers: Goodbye & Good Luck, and a brief mention of Grissom's Sabbatical
Summary: You know what, life's not fair.
A/N: Not beta-ed...this idea just popped into my head at 9:45 at night, so bear with me please.
Tossing and turning, Grissom tried to get her image out of his head. He saw her smile, felt her touch, heard her voice. He jolted awake, breathing heavily. He looked around but saw nothing in the dark room. He looked at the clock, which read midnight. He remembered he had the night off, and flopped back down on the bed. He curled up into a ball and hugged her pillow close to him. Tears stung his eyes as he inhaled her scent which still faintly lingered on the pillow. He sighed and tried to get back to sleep, but was again haunted by her face.
He groaned as he woke up. He slammed her pillow back into place and walked to the kitchen for some water. He felt a migraine coming on and he swallowed his medication before dropping down on the couch. Hank walked up to him and nuzzled his hand, whimpering softly. Grissom sighed and looked into the canine's eyes. He scratched the dog's ears lazily and said, "I know you miss her buddy...I miss her too."
He sat on the couch, staring a hole in the wall. He glanced at the numerous pictures that were scattered throughout the walls. He noticed how happy he and Sara looked. He cursed himself for not noticing that she was breaking down and for not doing anything to help her. He looked at the letter that lay on the coffee table. He had most of it memorized, but the word that stung the most wasGoodbye. It had an agonizing finality to the word, almost as if he would never see her again.
"Why'd she leave me a letter?" he asked to no one in particular. "When I went away on my sabbatical, I gave her fair warning, and she was okay with me leaving. I told her in person...I didn't leave her a letter. She just wrote and told me of her departure and left it for Judy to give to me. It's not fair!"
But a sudden realization came upon him that chilled his insides. He curled up into a ball and tried to shake off the sudden coldness that surrounded him. He draped a blanket over him and tucked it around him as he thought of where she could be and hoped that wherever she was that she was okay. However unfair it may be, the truth was that life just was not fair.
A/N 2: Okay, a little depressing, but I hope you liked it. Please review.
