"This is not our child," were the words out of Marian's mouth when the red haired woman who gave them refuge delivered the milk for the baby. Robin's heart felt a snap at these words. It could have been, he thought regretfully.
Even if he and Marian had one of their infamous arguments as she was stitching his wound, he couldn't help but think it was almost...domestic. It could have just happened in Locksley, instead of a stranger's house where they had to hide in. He could almost picture it, Marian tending to him after a slight scuffle from the villagers and her chastising him as she stitched his wound. Their child would be crying in the background, wishing its parents would attend to it.
"Master!" A voice that he recognized as Much called from outside. "Stay here," he told Marian as he left the house.
Marian watched him go, wondering what he could possibly be doing this time. The sounds of the baby in the room reminded her that she was not alone. She went towards him and held his little hand before picking him up to calm him down. As she did, an image flashed before her.
A small baby wrapped in a green blanket with Robin's eyes and her hair, smiling up at her.
She blinked and the image was gone from her mind. She dared not think about it again.
She heard the door open, but she did not notice Robin, nor his regretful stare as he saw Marian holding baby Seth.
One thing was present in both of their minds: We could have had this.
