Sirius heard the phone ringing from the living room. He grunted, hurriedly getting up so it wouldn't disturb Avary. "Hello?" he asked quietly into the receiver, wondering who would be calling them at such an hour.
"Hey. It's James," the voice on the other line mumbled.
Sirius paused, not knowing what to say. He hadn't talked to James in months. Quickly recovering, he sat down on the couch, holding the receiver close to his face. "Honey, why are you calling me so late? It's kind of hard to talk right now." He glanced back at the bedroom door, where his adept hearing heard Avary's slow breaths.
James sniffed, shuffling the phone around. "Sorry. I just…really missed talking to you."
He frowned. "Honey, why are you crying? Is everything okay?" he whispered – he couldn't be too loud.
"Well…" James started, and Sirius could tell this was hard for him. "Lily's in the next room. Sometimes…sometimes I wish she was you."
Sirius sighed, propping his feet up on the coffee table. "Oh, James. I guess we never really moved on."
James bit his lip. "It's really good to hear your voice saying my name; it sounds so sweet." He smiled. "Coming from the lips of an angel, hearing those words…it makes me weak."
Sirius couldn't help but smile. He hadn't realized how much he had missed talking to James. Their relationship had been on the rocky side since they both got with different people after Hogwarts – Sirius with Avary and James with Lily, whom James had recently married.
"Boy, you make it hard to be faithful." He ran a hand through his hair with a sigh. "You know, it's funny that you're calling me tonight. I've been dreaming about you a lot. Obviously, I haven't told Avary about that."
"Does she know you're talking to me? Will it start a fight?"
Sirius bit his lip, looking towards the door again, a pang of guilt spreading through his body. "No, I don't think she has a clue."
James sniffed, twirling the phone cord around his index finger. "You know…I've dreamt of you, too."
Sirius smiled, suppressing a yawn. "It was bloody amazing talking to you, James, but I think we should both go before we're noticed. I…I love you." He smiled, gently setting the phone down and making his way back into bed.
The next night, Sirius heard the phone ringing, quickly tip-toeing over to it. It was James. "Honey, why are you calling me so late?"
