His sneakers scraped across the concrete as he slid underneath falling bricks. Fires sprouted at random across the town, heating and poisoning the air.

Jamie ran as fast as his feet could take him, dodging citizens and debris. An explosion sounded in the background, signaling another possible death. Or deaths. To his left fell another building, crushing the asphalt in front of him. Jamie skipped to the side and kept running, checking over his shoulder.

A scream sounded behind him, stopping him in his tracks. Turning, Jamie caught sight of Pippa laying on the ground, ankles bloody and torn. Brown eyes pleaded him for help. Jamie lifted the girl onto his back, her arms wrapped around his neck. Lights fell from the sky, searching for victims.

Jamie ran into an ally, hoping to find some cover. Pippa stayed silent the whole trek, arms wrapped around his shoulders. He dropped her off against the wall, watching her head bob with each breath. Jamie tried to catch his breath while he rummaged through his backpack, now torn and burnt. Ashen hands found their way to a empty thermos. Throwing the useless item behind him Jamie rummaged through some more.

"Jamie," she whispered.

Finally Jamie found some water and a cloth. Jamie dripped some water on Pippa's face while rubbing away the grim. Hopefully he could get her back to base with the others, he was all too eager to get back to his sister.

Pippa's face contorted into a grimace as he wiped over a cut.

"You're fine now," he rasped with chapped and bloody lips. "We're fine now, promise."

Pippa repeated. "Jamie."

Scrapping sounds came from above them, making Jamie alert. Stopping his movements, Jamie looked upwards, regretting that decision immediately. Zombies hung over the rooftops, eyes them hungerly with their hollow eyes. Jamie scrambled next to Pippa as they closed in, eyes wide with fear.

"Jamie, run."

Jamie clung to Pippa's thin arm and ran off into the other direction, far away from the lurking danger. Together they set track, on their way to safety and, hopefully, their families. It was a long journey ahead of them. And together, they ran.
