Unquestionable Silence

If the whole world was against you except for one person, what would you do? Would you hide? Would you give up? Or would you keep fighting?

To be honest, Hermione was the only thing that kept making him want to move forward on their hopeless and fruitless quest. She was the only person who still believed in him, and he'd be damned if he let her down too. She'd been through enough already.

Ron had just left a couple of days ago. Things were quiet around here now that he had left. He and Hermione refused to talk, mourning their lost friendship with Ron.

But at night, he could hear her crying into her pillow. She was trying not to wake him, but he had always had a problem with sleeping through the night. It made it harder to sleep knowing that she was in even more pain than he was.

Hermione loved listening to Ron's old radio. She'd listen to whatever was one, whether it be the news or old music. Honestly, he couldn't stand listening to the news because it brought back his fight with his ex-best friend. But if that's what Hermione needed to cope, then he'd let her cope however the hell she wanted.

It started as another quiet night listening to old music on Ron's old radio. O Children came on, and he knew how much Hermione loved dancing. She just looked so miserable and broken, and he hated seeing her like that. Seeing as she was his only friend, he knew he had to cheer her up. He made up his mind. He was going to make her smile if it was the last thing he did.

He stood up and slowly made his way towards Hermione, so as not to startle her. He extended his left hand, giving her the option to turn him down. She sighed and grabbed his hand.

He helped her stand and then grabbed for the back of her neck, looking for the clasp to the Horcrux necklace. Her mouth popped open in surprise when he threw the necklace on the bed. That thing could go to hell for all he cared.

He grabbed her hand and led her to the center of the tent. And they danced.

He knew he looked stupid. The only time he had ever danced was during the ball in 4th year. But he saw he was making her happy, so he didn't care how he looked.

And then she smiled. She hadn't smiled in such a long time that he almost forgot what her beautiful smile looked like. And after she smiled, she laughed.

Her laugh was beautiful. It sounded like tinkling bells and it made him smile.

And still, they danced.

He tried spinning her, but it didn't look right. She didn't seem to care. She just smiled wider and laughed a little harder.

O Children was still playing but they were pretty much ignoring the song. They were dancing to their own music, together.

They shared a moment full of happiness and joy. Their first in a long time.

He was just happy that he made her laugh and smile. He missed when she was happy.

Sometimes he wishes that she had gone with Ron. She'd have probably been happier with Ron than with him. But she chose him over Ron, and he had never felt more grateful towards somebody.

But, finally, the song ended. They just stood there, looking at each other. And for a second, he had to nerve to lean forward slightly, as if to kiss her. But realizing what he was about to do, he jerked backwards.

And Hermione just walked away.

They didn't speak for the rest of the night.

But when she stayed up for her shift to stay up and keep watch, Harry laid in his bed, pretending to be asleep.

And for the first time in a long while, he didn't hear her crying.

He smiled, turned around, and slept for the first time in a long while.

Fin.
