A/N: I admit, sometimes my ability to write sheer sweetness makes me gag.
No Words
Their relationship began in silence, with the simple meeting of gazes across a crowded platform. It continued in the same manner.
A reassuring brush of fingers as they waited to be Sorted. A nod in the hallways. A fleeting smile of congratulations in class. They shared a table in the Library, books spread out, essays half-done, the warmth of another person beside them heartening in the cold castle.
It was a new experience for Rose; silence was never heard at her noisy family gatherings or in her home, constantly overrun with siblings and cousins. It was new for Scorpius too; though Malfoy Manor was often silent, it was never as comforting as the silence they shared.
It was amazing, the number of things you could learn about someone in silence. Rose knew, when she saw him drum his fingers on a table, that he was not impatient but rather deep in thought. Scorpius knew, when she turned her head away from one of James' pranks, that she was not annoyed but holding back her laughter.
Things were so much simpler in silence. There was no awkwardness, no rambling speeches. It was quick- a soft brushing of elbows as they stood by the notice about the Hogsmeade visit. A tilt of the head, a raised brow- are you interested? The answering smile.
They walked together through the village, fingers intertwined, leading each other with a gentle tug here and there. In the end, they paused in a doorway; he swept a curl away from her face and then they both moved and brushed lips in a moment both infinitely short and infinitely sweet.
No one else understood, Rose thought as she leaned dreamily against Scorpius, his arm warm around her waist. Her family prattled about Death Eaters, his family about tradition, and both of them about the sheer absurdity of a relationship based on silence.
She and Scorpius knew better. Words were not the only form of communication. They smiled; their gazes met, and they knew their kind was stronger.
