A Day In The Life Of A Turret

Long time no write! Thanks for your comments on Learning to Speak. Unfortunately I have a mild case of writer's block and have been busy of late so haven't had time to write much.

Anyway, I was watching the video A Day In The Life of a Turret on Youtube and it inspired me to write this quick little one-shot (literally, took me about half an hour to write). This is set before the events of Portal. I of course don't own Portal or its characters!

8.00am

Turret #4585 stretched her sides out as wide as they would go and gently bobbed them side to side in a approximation of a big yawn and stretch. Today was a beautiful day for shooting some test subjects.

She flicked her optic and laser on and announced "Sentry mode activated!" All around her other turrets were doing the same, creating a laser show of deadly proportions.

9.30am

Test chamber 3. All was still, apart from a sudden flash of orange. The turret immediately began searching, asking if they were still there, and would they come over here.

10.00am

Still no test subjects. Turret #4585 hummed thoughtfully. She was one of the newer models of Aperture Science Sentry Turrets that came with a built in lullaby feature- originally intended for shipping models, they had been assigned to test chambers after sales proved not to be a success. She wished she had been a home model though. "I could be good at protecting babies" she thought.

Next to her, Turret #4586 spoke up. "So, do you really think there's such as thing as the Animal King Turret?" he asked. The other turrets gasped.

"Of course there is! I heard he sits in his own chamber deep in the facility" Turret #4530 squeaked. This was a popular speculation subject among turrets- there wasn't much to do otherwise.

1pm

The smell of food wafted through the test chamber. It was lunchtime for the test subjects- Aperture Science Test Subject High Nutrition Gruel. To the subjects it tasted foul, but to the turrets, it was the best thing they ever smelled.

"Who gave us smell sensors anyway?" Turret #4585 complained.

3:30pm

Another orange flash, a blast of orange and blue and 10 turrets all activating at once? There was a mass chorus of "Are you still there" and a few cries of "aaaahhhh!"

The last thing Turret #4585 saw was another falling in her direction. They both cried at once "Coming through!" and shot madly in all direction as they were knocked over and deactivated. With a sad whisper of "I don't hate you", the sound of a button being activated and a door opening, the chamber was silent.
