She really should have seen it coming. Hayley was a trained soldier and police officer so she really should have seen it coming. Someone was yelling her name and by the time her service weapon was out of its holster, fire was consuming her side and licking up her ribs. Sticky hot blood trickled down her alabaster skin, the dark rouge staining her unblemished canvass as she felt her knees give out. Collapsing, her hands scraped against the rough pavement of the street and she struggled to keep her balance, her face crashing into the ground soon after as her body gave up.

Someone was screaming. Was she screaming? No, it wasn't her. It was her partner. Alice, the blonde thought desperately. Alice, please don't leave me.

"Hayley! Oh, dear God, Hayley, please," her partner sobbed, rushing to her side.

"I don't think He can save me now," Hayley choked out, her azure eyes locking with the dark sky above her. The moon seemed to smile sadly down at it's friend, watching as lead claimed her body to its end.

"Hayley, paramedics are on their way. Please, stay with me," Alice shouted and Hayley tried to speak, the coppery taste of blood filling her mouth.

"Tell...tell Nick I'm sorry. I broke my promise," she breathed out, her head laying back.

And this, dear readers, is where we begin.

A/N: Hello all. This idea was formed out of the purely selfish desire to do what I love most: develop characters and a relationship. I hate the idea of going through every single episode and just typing out what you all already now, so I instead wanted to focus on the moments that really make a character. What makes them tick, who makes them fall apart, and who can stitch them together. I love Nick's character and felt it was unfair that he never got a girl that matched his wit, tenacity, and willingness to go all the way to help a victim. Thus, Hayley was born to my mind like Athena to Zeus. I hope you all enjoy and I would love to hear feedback! :)
