I got a bit of inspiration after finishing KH3 recently, and wrote something small. MAJOR spoilers for the ending, don't read it if you want the ending unspoiled. Enjoy!
"I'll find you… I promise!"
"I know you will!"
The promise they made all those years ago haunted her soul. Time and time again, they had found each other, only to be ripped apart again. Every time they came together, they slipped through each others fingers like dust in the wind.
A tear makes its way down her face, traveling slowly to her chin, where it drops off onto the tree below her. The same tree she had shared the paopu fruit with him. Perhaps that was why this had all happened. The fruit was said to have a special property; those who shared it would have their destinies intertwined forever. They'd always be apart of each other's lives.
She hadn't told him what they were eating, only that it would keep them together.
How ironic.
She turned her head to the side, imagining Sora sitting there next to her with his beautiful blue eyes and vibrant smile. The image faded quickly.
Sora was gone. He'd abused the power of awakening to find her heart after Xehanort had murdered her to provoke him. They'd only gotten six short hours together before he vanished from the strain. Slipped through her fingers again. Right when she thought they could finally, finally be together.
Another tear sneaks its way out of the corner of her eye, hot on her skin. She'd cried like this for a week. Staring at the ocean and letting the tears fall. All she'd ever wanted was to be with him again. To live peacefully with Riku and forget all of the pain they'd been forced to endure because of Xehanort. Instead, the one person she thought she wouldn't ever lose had sacrificed himself for her, and would never come home to her again.
Over and over the memory of Sora fading from her sight while she cries and he tells her that he'll find her again plays in her mind. She knows he can't this time. Xemnas had warned him that using the power of waking to chase hearts came with the highest price, and he had ignored him. For her.
The last words he would ever say to her were the ones she'd wanted to hear for so long, and knowing that he would never say them to her again wrenched her heart and brought her to tears again. No longer simply leaking from her eyes, the crying became soft sobs before a true, heart wringing cry towards the universe for being so cruel.
For tearing them apart again when they finally, finally finished it. For letting him slip through her life like dust in the wind yet again, when she finally thought she could hold onto something solid.
"Kairi… I'll find you again. I promise."
"I love you."
