Happy Cody Day! Remember... Cody's birthday... April 1st... Well, this is a song-fic of Fireflies by Owl City. It reminds me of Cody! :3 You're gonna just have to look up the song because I can't post the lyrics myself.
Cody climbed into bed, wiping his nose. He had been crying because his parents had forgotten that today was a special day. Eighth birthdays only come once, you know! Really he should be use to it by now, since they had forgotten the years past too, but he was still young. Maybe today wasn't really April 1st, and that we'll celebrate tomorrow! he thought. As his eyes drifted closed, a flash of light caught his eyes. He sat up and looked around. What was that?
The flash came again from outside his window. Cody gasped. Floating around in the air were thousands of fireflies. He dashed over to the window and gazed at them, amazed.
Cody pulled his window open and jumped onto the tree branch below. He had escaped from his bedroom before, so he knew how. In less than thirty seconds, he was walking around in his backyard, still staring at the millions of fireflies. It was a dream come true. The first fireflies of the year just happened to show up on Cody's birthday, in his own backyard!
He reached out and tried to catch one. It slid from his fingertips. Sensing a challenge, he jumped up, trying to catch multiple at the same time. A smile slowly spread on his face.
He frolicked and jumped and skipped around with the lightning bugs. Cody imagined that they were playing games with him. Today, he had made hundreds of new friends! He crashed down on his back, lying in the soft grass and staring up at the free light show. One of the fireflies flew down right onto his hand and he slowly closed his fingers. "You are my very first friend," he whispered. Then, he released him back and watched him fly around with a grin on his face stretching from ear to ear.
Cody knew that he was supposed to be asleep, but he couldn't get himself to leave. His young mind was so entranced by the flying lights that he could never fall asleep now! He wanted to stay out here forever, dancing in the moonlight.
He felt as if he weren't this close to home. To him, home was a place where you get yelled at, ignored, or even hit. But here, this place was filled with joy and happiness and feelings that he couldn't even describe. He literally felt as if he were the one flying in the air. He had never laughed that much before.
Eventually, sleep got the better of him, and he reluctantly climbed the tree back to his bedroom window. Before entering his house, he sat perched on the branch as he said his silent good-byes. Some came closer to him, as if asking him not to go.
Suddenly, an idea dawned on him. He rushed back inside and grabbed a glass jar from his chemistry set. He carefully poked holes in the top, then climbed back outside. This time, the fireflies flew right up, and it was simple to capture them in the jar.
Cody took the jar containing five fireflies and set it on his nightstand.
Lying in bed, he watched as his fireflies danced around, lighting up his whole room. He was fine with staying here all night.
Cody had fallen asleep, but as soon as he woke up, he saw his fireflies, still prancing around in the jar. He hated too, but he knew he had to set them free. He opened his window once again and released them. "Good-bye," he whispered.
Even though they had to leave, it was still the best birthday present ever.
And there you have it! Happy birthday Cody, wherever you are!
