Fly Away Baby
"It's your turn," Izayoi complained as their son wailed from the crib near the bed.
Kain groaned and turned over, slipping out of Izayoi's arms and pulling his legs over the side of the bed. He sat there a moment with his head cradled in his hand, and sighed.
This had been the seventh interruption that night. Raising a family and late-night crying fits had lost their novelty, Kain decided.
"Kain," Izayoi grumbled without opening her eyes.
Kain felt a half-hearted kick to his back through the blankets and that finally got him standing.
He stumbled over to the crib and stared down at their infant son who was writhing in protest.
Kain picked him up, a bundle of small limbs and rage, and held him at arm's length. "Mm," he hummed, smelling the problem immediately.
Kain walked into the room adjacent to their bedroom and set about finding a clean cloth with their son cradled against his shoulder.
"Okay, okay," Kain muttered quietly, setting the infant down and removing the soiled clothing. It was quick work, changing the diaper, but his son didn't see it that way. He was crying loud enough to wake the entire castle, and Kain winced every time he reached a pitch high enough to shatter glass.
Kain picked up his son, rocking him back and forth, but the infant would not be soothed; screaming and wailing and, in effect, raising the dead.
"Keep this up and you'll wake your mother up for good," Kain whispered to him. "And then we'll be in real trouble."
The baby continued to cry despite the warning, and Kain's dismay rose as well. He was beginning to wonder what to do, when he glanced at his armor in the corner. It glinted in the moonlight, and suddenly he had an idea.
Kain quickly donned trousers and a shirt and threw on his boots, carrying his son out of the quarters he shared with Izayoi and down the castle hallway.
It was a wonderful night for moon gazing anyway, and the farther the crying was from Izayoi the better.
Kain reached the courtyard at last, and with clear skies above, he stooped low, still clutching his infant son, and sprang. He flew upwards with speed, the wind whistling in his ears and whipping at his hair. When he reached the apex of the jump, time seemed to slow down, the air to still. Kain looked up at the glowing moon and smiled for more reasons than one.
The crying had stopped. The wailing had stilled. As Kain dropped back to the ground, he glanced down at his son who was staring up at him with big blue eyes.
"Some day I'll teach you how to fly," Kain told him, padding his landing before springing upwards again.
The baby cooed happily as the night air glided over top of them, and Kain discovered he had found a cure for the late-night fits at last. "No more tears," he assured his son as they looked up at the night sky together.

A/N: Um. I have NO idea where this came from, honestly. I was in the middle of writing ch27 of WoTC and then...OH HAI. A DISTRACTION.
I couldn't resist...these two have infected my brain and I can't get them out :D
It's not...a direct continuation of "Drinks All Around" but similar theme. I mean, c'mon. Kain as a dad? Who wouldn't want to see THAT.
Whipped this up in about half an hour, lol.
Thanks for reading!
