As I began to get ready for the day, I heard a tone emanating from my phone that sounded a bit like a Psyduck. Surprised, I ran to my bed tossing aside sheets and pillows to find it, and finally, it appeared. Quickly I scooped it up, careful not to drop it on the wooden floor. It was a text from my neighbor, Lydia, saying
"Get over here now!"
Realizing it must be something important, I furiously made my bed, ran a comb through my short brown hair and dashed out the door.
Just down the street, her house was connected to a small lab that her father worked in during his free time.
"Anchorage is on a small island, just north of Hoenn's coast, but as separated as it is from the rest of the world, I've lived a nice quiet life here with my parents, whom both work at an office on the other side of the Island, specializing in customer support.
After being left out in the rain the other day, the seat on the bike seat was still damp, but, having little time, I toughed it out and started riding towards Lydia' road sloped up after a few meters, so I shifted gears and started pedaling harder.
Exhausted from the amount of effort I just put into getting up the road, I decided to walk my bike the rest of the way there.
After trudging down the street for a few minutes, I fell backwards and hit my head onto the ground as a car sped by, scaring the wits out of me.
I cursed under my breath and kept heading towards the house, eventually, I reached the cobblestone path leading up to her house. I went up to the door and
knocked. For a few minutes, I sat there on a bench her grandfather made, waiting for her to answer. Finally, the door opened, and surprisingly, it was her dad, whom I referred to as Professor Mekkar when conversing.
"Come inside Tobias, quickly, quickly, it's about to rain!" he whispered to me.
Knowing that her mom often slept in the morning after her night shifts, I quietly came in and took my shoes off. Before I could even say hello, he led me towards his lab. "Strange" I thought, he never lets anyone into that side of the house, not even his own wife.
After he opened the door, I stood there in awe of the size of the lab, the floor was a dark hardwood like the rest of the house, while the ceiling rose 20 feet into the air, with large bookshelves bordering the eastern wall. Occasionally, small cardboard boxes were stacked up around the room, but what caught my eye the most was the group of machines around a table off to the left. I didn't bother trying to imagine what they did, as the knowledge is probably way beyond me.
On the table, I spotted 3 Pokeballs. In Anchorage, Pokémon were a rare site, due to the lack of forestation left by earlier inhabitants of the island. In the afternoon, a group of Taillows would swiftly deliver the mail to each house, then head back to the post office to rest up for the next day, but that's all I've ever seen of the strange creatures.
Then, I was snapped out of my thinking by Lydia coming over from a table and greeting me. She was wearing a red jacket and some denim jeans while her hazel hair was tied into a ponytail behind her head.
There was a excited, cheerful look on her face.
"Hey Tobias!, you'll never guess why we're here!" she said while playing with her Pikachu bracelet. "Come over to this table, both of you, c'mon now" Professor Mekkar said with a twinkle in his eye.
"Today, I am allowing the 2 of you, to each raise a pokemon!"
