Moon Girl

She tumbled after leaping over the bush, but that didn't stop her from getting back up and continuing to run like the devil was at her heels. She ran for miles, never stopping and never slowing down. When the first rays of sunlight rose in the horizon and the stars in the sky disappeared she collapsed. Curling up into a ball she began sobbing, ignoring the bitter wind that numbed her body.

--

Hours later she awoke and looked to the sky.

"Only a couple of minutes." She said to herself.

"What's only a couple of minutes?" She jumped in fright, looking behind her to see a boy, standing in the shadows, his features indiscernible.

"Who are you?" He tilted his head and grinned.

"Nobody."

"Well then what do you want?"

"Why were you crying?" She looked to the sky again before answering.

"I can never reach it."

"Reach what?"

"The Moon." She stated, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"Why on Earth would you want to reach the Moon?"

"So that I can leave here."

"What's so bad about here that you'd want to reach the Moon?"

"Nothing, it's just that nothing has as much meaning as the Moon."

"What do you mean? How does the Moon have more meaning than Earth?" As the sun began its descent she stoop up and turned towards the boy.

"It lights up the darkness." And with that, she began to run.
