A/N: So, just a quick, tiny oneshot that I thought of when I was listening to "Best of Wives and Best of Women" 'cause I'm total Lams trash. Hope you like it!
I slowly moved the covers back, sliding out of bed. John had his arm around my waist, but it dropped to the mattress with my movement. I froze, waiting to see if he would wake up. He sniffled, and buried his face deeper into his pillow with a content sigh. I let out a small chuckle; He never was one to get up early.
I bent down, brushing my lips across his forehead before quietly rising off the bed.
"Alex…?" John murmured through the pillow. "You okay?"
"Shhh, I'm fine, go back to sleep." I whispered, stuffing my gun under my coat on the corner desk. John groaned, slowly flipping onto his back.
"Alexander, come back to sleep." He yawned.
"I have an early meeting out of town." I replied, turning around to watch him slightly sit up. He tilted his head to see out the window above our bed.
"It's still dark out." He rolled his head towards me, raising an eyebrow. I moved away from the bed, stopping at my desk. I slid some pages around, looking for one of my least-filled notebooks. I found one hiding under some new insults that I had thought of for Jefferson.
"I know. I just need to write something down." I softly told him, tearing a sheet of paper out of my notebook. He gently scoffed.
"Why do you write like you're running out of time?" He asked, for probably the millionth time in his knowing me.
"Shh." I coaxed, trying to get him back to blissful sleep.
"Come back to bed, that would be enough." He sighed, lightly patting my side of the bed.
"I'll be back before you know I'm gone." I shook my head, a frown tugging at my lips.
"Come back to sleep." He firmly stated, clearly not asking.
"This meeting's at dawn." I argued, not wanting to be late.
"Well, I'm not letting you leave." He declared, wriggling to the other side of the bed and rising up out of it.
"John…" I softly spoke.
He wrapped the bed sheet around his waist, and strolled over to me. A smile spread on my lips as he placed his hands on my hips. He gently walked me backwards, going until my lower back pressed against the edge of my desk. He leaned his head forward, just enough for our noses to touch.
"Mmhmm?" He raised his eyebrows, his big brown eyes looking innocently into mine.
I answered him with a breathy chuckle, flustered from the sudden closeness. He grinned, bringing a hand up and cupping the side of my face. He pulled me against him with his free hand, and I coiled my arms around his neck.
He looked right into my eyes, before winking and letting out a small giggle. He tilted forward, our warm breaths mingling in the tight space between our faces. His lips pressed against mine, eliciting a tiny moan from both of us.
I brought my hands down from his neck, tenderly pushing them onto his chest. Our lips parted, only for him to plant a quick peck on my nose before pulling back the tiniest bit.
"Hey." I breathed, attempting to catch my breath. His eyes were darker than before, and beads of sweat had formed along his eyebrows during our… talk.
He hummed in response, slowly closing his eyes as he leaned his forehead on mine.
"Best of husbands and best of men."
