Casey looks at me,
eyebrows knit together
in frustration
and
confusion
my hands are in my lap
tucked together
holding on
to each other
as if
they were holding on
to someone else
"What's different?"
he asks me
but I don't respond
because I don't want him to know
that I don't
love him
anymore
"nothing" I respond
but he doesn't believe me
because his eyebrows
are still knit together
in frustration
and maybe
a little bit
of understanding
"Is it someone else?"
he asks me.
"No," I lie
but he knows
"It's her, isn't it."
he doesn't say her name
but my head still snaps up
at the mention
of her
and in my reaction
he has
his answer
he squeezes his temple
just next
to his knit eye brows
that now don't look
so menacing
any more
"How did you know?"
I whisper
because I'm scared
that she'll hear me
from her house
on the other side
of town
"Because, Jane."
he says
"You look at her
like she hung
the moon."
I look at him
and suddenly it hits me
"It's because
she did."
