Coffee Break
By Chinesemoon
A/N: A short one-shot.
Disclaimer: I don't own these NCIS people, but I'm rather fond of McGee.
Abby typed away furiously at her keyboard. She was standing up at her counter, surfing the web. She knew she should be working more, but something compelled her to search gothic online clothing stores. She smiled to herself as she scrolled down a webpage, her eyes quickly glancing back and forth. She peeked at her watch and frowned.
The lab doors open behind her. Abby sighed and didn't bother turning around.
"About time, Gibbs," she said casually from her computer, making sure to click off the site and onto her lab report. "I was getting thirsty."
"Ah, it's me, Abbes," came the voice behind her. Abby turned around and stared at McGee, holding a large styrofoam cup of coffee. He smiled shyly at her, one side of his mouth lifting as it always did when he gave her "that look."
"Where's Gibbs, McGee?" Abby asked, raising an eyebrow at her. "He usually brings me my drink."
"Well, he had to talk to the director," McGee shrugged. "He told me to bring this down to you."
"Interesting, McGee."
Abby narrowed her eyes at him, a faint smile gracing her lips. He frowned slightly in confusion. She whipped her pigtails over her shoulders and turned back to her computer. She re-opened the clothing page.
"What's interesting?" McGee asked from behind her. He walked over and set the coffee down next to her on the desk. She glanced at it, then at him, a knowing looking spreading across her face.
"Gibbs didn't send you down here," Abby said, smirking.
"What?" McGee said with a slight protest. "Yes, he did. He told me to bring you this coffee—"
"No, McGee," Abby grinned. "Because Gibbs knows I hate coffee. You came down here to see me, didn't you?."
"Well, I, ah," McGee stammered. "I came to bring coffee…" he trailed off.
A moment of silence fell on them. McGee looked around the room awkwardly. Abby jumped up and down suddenly and McGee stared at her.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Showing you how hyper I am, without added caffeine," she said cheerfully. "If I had drank that coffee, you'd be on the floor by now."
"Um, am I supposed to know what that means?" McGee scratched his head.
"I didn't think you would, McGee," Abby grinned at him. She waited for a reaction from him but he only stared blankly at her.
Abby rolled her eyes and grabbed the coffee. She clutched her fist and chugged half of the coffee down. She took a large breath and begin to gulp down the other half of the beverage. The look on McGee's face almost had her spitting coffee out all over the room. Thankfully she finished the coffee before an embarrassing scene could play out.
Abby clapped triumphantly and slammed the cup onto the counter, making a sour face.
"I thought you didn't like coffee," McGee said, nodding at the empty cup.
"I don't," Abby smiled widely. "But you clearly want me to knock you to the floor."
McGee's eyes widen but he laughed nervously. The lab doors opened again and Abby looked up at Gibbs.
"McGee, why aren't you working?" Gibbs said. He handed a big gulp to Abby wordlessly. "Get back upstairs and leave Abby alone."
McGee turned silently and made for the door in a hurried manner, clearly trying to avoid an unwanted smack from Gibbs should he linger a moment longer.
"Maybe next time McGee!" Abby called after him.
"I won't ask," Gibbs said, raising his eyebrows and turning in his usual smooth move to leave.
Abby turned back to her computer screen with a wide grin on her face.
"Next time, McGee."
