Lies
"You're the one I'm least likely to fall in love with," she told him. In a way, it was a big, fat lie. In fact, she already had – for all intensive purposes – fallen in love with him; but she had banished that love as soon as she realized what it was. Yes, he was charming, smart, a true gentleman. He respected her, never hid from her, but never forced anything upon her, either. She had to fight to keep her mind off of him, but she was not about to put herself in such a vulnerable position again; not after last time. Love meant commitment, and commitment meant risks. Allison Cameron was not about to risk her heart breaking again.
"You're not the man I'm looking for," she told him. Part of her broke to say this, but acknowledging that he was the love of her life would let those sacred feelings flow in her again… those feelings that had belonged to another man. Besides, it wouldn't be fair to Chase if part of her heart – her life – was off-limits to him. No, she would not allow this… this… petty crush to get to her. She was strong; she could stand on her own. Sure, she'd love to get to know Chase better, even spend the rest of her life with him, but there were too many things that could go wrong.
As she walked away, she reinforced the wall she had built around her heart. She had no guarantee of a happy ending if she let herself love again; but she was certain to avoid heartbreak if she stayed single. It was not okay for her to fall in love with him. Robert Chase was way too good to be true.
