Many thanks to JazziePerson who beta read this for me :)

Jack is having a very bad day on the job.

It would've been fun if he had done it alone, no tough job for the man who couldn't die, but he's not alone. Gwen is with him, and her mortality is something for him to worry about.

The alien rushes head first towards Gwen and she aims at it to no avail. The ammo is spent, so Jack pushes her out of the way and lets the alien push him to the ground, wrapping his arms around its head until he's sure he can snap its neck.

On a good day, he would've made a joke, invited it out for a coffee or maybe a walk on a beach, but today is definitely not a good day.
After it stops struggling beneath him, Gwen pulls it off him.

"Jack? You alright?"

He smiles, "Great. Now, let's go." he's ready to leave the dark location, where the rift had been acting up, but as soon as he turns his back on Gwen, the earth begins to shake.

The ground suddenly collapses beneath them, leaving a very uninviting whole in the floor. "Jack," Gwen's eye widens as she tries to remain still, keeping her feet on the only bit of solid ground that isn't shattering and she measures the distance between her and Jack.

How far could she jump?
Not far, Jack figures, but she would have to try.
"C'mon Gwen. Jump!"
"I won't make it!"
"So you're just gonna stand there-"
"SHUT IT! I'm jumping, all right, just- just give me a moment-"
"-You don't have a moment Gwen, now jump!"

So she jumps, and like he guessed, she doesn't make it all the way through but far enough for him to throw his weight on the ground and take hold of her arm.
"Jack, don't let go, don't you dare let go," she grabs his other hand with her free one as he pulls her to him.

She throws her leg over the edge once she's close enough and he pulls the rest of her body to him; she's too tired and rattled to notice that half of her body is slightly draped over his.
He puts an arm around her shoulder, pulling her to him before he laughs and Gwen joins him soon enough.

Okay, so maybe it's not such a bad day.

They are both alive, the alien is dead and Gwen is safe, in his arms, with her leg draped over his.
No, not a bad day.
Not anymore.
Not when he has Gwen near him. He can hear her heart beat thumping frantically inside her chest.

"We best be going now, Jack, 'before we get to see another one of those things."
He has to agree, against his better judgment, "Yeah, maybe this time we can keep one as a pet."
"We've already got a pet, Jack," she throws him a look, a grin that lets him know she's not talking about the pterodactyl.
He grins back.

Throwing his arm around Gwen, he helps her to her feet, walking away from the scene with his hand clutching at her waist, a huge smile plastered across his face.
