He stood immobilized. His chest barely moved as he had to remember to breath. In. Out. In. Out… The shock pulsated through his bloodstream, paralyzing him. It was too much for his body to take and he fell hard to his knees.
In. Out. In. Out…
All noise ceased as time slowed down around him. The only sounds audible were the beats of his heart and ragged breathing.
"Jack!" Chloe's voice filtered through after the fourth time she'd called. He looked up slowly to meet her concerned gaze. "You have to move. You're in the way there and about 10 people have almost run you over. C'mon, Jack," she spoke, uncharacteristically, gently. She pulled him to his feet and he struggled to stay upright. He had turned deathly pale as all the color drained from his face.
In. Out. In. Out…
He was pulled across to the far wall on deserted side of the building. He was in a daze and barely registered collapsing out of Chloe's grasp. His mind was stuck in the moment of time not ten minutes before. A moment that changed Jack's life again for the worse.
In, out, in, out…
His breathing came in short gasps. Chloe looked down at her friend and felt guilty for feeling a little self-satisfied at guessing Jack's secret correctly. She sat down beside him and rubbed small circles across his tensed back. She wasn't used to comforting people, especially Jack Bauer, and hoped she was doing okay. She was really upset about what happened too, but not nearly as devastated as Jack.
Tears steadily slid down his face as the sound of a gun being fired echoed repeatedly in his head. Then the sound of a body hitting the floor. Jack had yelled into his headset, but his desperate cry received no response. At that moment his heart had stopped beating and lungs stopped breathing.
Chloe watched Jack start to tremble unchecked. He couldn't stop the tears or shaking that wracked his body.
In, out. In. Out…
"I never… got to… to tell him, Chloe," he said shakily through his sobs.
She looked down at him sadly. "I know… Despite the fact that you didn't get to tell him, I think he knew. And he's watching over you now, along with Teri. He's finally reunited with Michelle, too," Chloe tried to give him some sort of comfort. A few people were staring at him. She glared fiercely at them until they turned away. He didn't need an audience, though he couldn't care less about anything right then.
"No, it's not fair!" Jack said, angrily. "I loved him." He broke a bit more. "I loved Tony."
In. Out. In. Out…
Jack had started to wonder why he kept breathing…
