"…The light in the hallway fell on her bed mingling with the darkness of the night that seeped in through the window, and Meggie lay there waiting for the dark to disappear and take her fear of some evil menace away with it. Only later did she understand that it had not appeared for the first time that night. It had just slunk back in again."
Autumn closed her book and laid it on the nightstand beside her bed. She had just finished the first chapter of Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, which she reading for the third time. She could hear the thunder and the wind howling, the lightning lit up the sky.
Autumn tiptoed over to her window and peered out through the tiny water droplets crawling all over it. She imagined she was Meggie watching Dustfinger, standing in the pouring rain.
Then she turned and lay down on her bed. She closed her eyes, and listened to the tap of the rain hitting the windowpane. Seconds later, she was asleep.
When Autumn opened her eyes she found herself in a place that looked exactly like Meggie's room was described. Meggie was lying on her bed, while Mo was just leaving the room.
"Meggie where's he going?" Autumn asked, forgetting that Meggie wouldn't recognize her.
Startled, Meggie shot off of her bed. "Who are you? How did you get in here?" She started backing away, towards the door.
"Oh… I'm Autumn… but that's not important right now. I'd explain, but you wouldn't understand just yet. You will soon enough. Trust me." Autumn replied.
"How can I trust you if I don't even…?" But Autumn had already sprinted out of the room.
Autumn snuck out of the house and into the van. She crouched down, and sat in the back corner.
Several minutes later, Meggie and Mo entered the van. Mo was the only one who said anything, "Very well then, off we go south."
But just as they pulled up to the gate, the van stopped. Autumn remembered what was happening; from the other two times she had read Inkheart. So sure enough when she peeked out of the window, she saw Dustfinger.
