This happens on May 24, 2009, the day after Elena's car accident, pre Pilot. Short Elena/Matt one-shot.

Elena's eyes were closed but she slowly awakened. She heard some voices outside of the room.

"…was a miracle…"

"…who found her…"

And suddenly, it all came back to her: the car accident. Her parents.

Quickly, she sat up in her bed. Her eyes were now wide open. Every bone in her body hurt. She looked around and realized she was in the hospital.

"She's awake," she heard Nurse Haynes say. She and some doctors rushed into her room. "Elena, you need to lie down and get some rest."

"What's going on?" she asked, "Where are… where are my parents? Are-are they OK?"

The doctors looked at each other. "You've had a really bad accident. You need some sleep."

"No!" she exclaimed, "Where are they? They're OK, right? Right?"

"Elena…"

"Why won't you tell me?" she asked. "Where –"

"Elena!"

She looked up and saw Matt. He had a bouquet in his hands and looked at her worriedly. "My God…" he said as he eyed her wounds.

"Matt, you can visit her later," Nurse Haynes said, "Right now she needs some rest."

"No," Elena objected. "Please… It'll just take a minute."

The nurse sighed. "Fine. Just a minute!"

She and the doctors left and Matt sat down on her bed. He put the flowers on the table and caressed her face. Elena managed to give him a little smile. "I'm so glad you're here."

He nodded. "Of course."

"Do I look terrible?" she asked.

"Yeah, you do." Matt smiled. "But still beautiful."

Elena closed her eyes for a moment, then she opened them again and looked at her boyfriend. "Matt, I need you to tell me the truth about something."

"Yeah, of course," he said.

She sighed. "Where are my parents?"

Matt's smile disappeared.

"No one will tell me!" Elena started to freak and Matt's expression didn't make it better. "They're not… they're not OK, are they?"

"No." He shook his head. "Look, I'll come back later and in the meantime, you should sleep…"

"I don't want to sleep!" she said. "What happened to them, Matt? I sure won't get some rest until I know it."

He looked down to the ground. "They, um… They're… I…" Matt couldn't find the words to say it.

"Are they… dead?" Elena asked. Her eyes filled with tears.

"Yeah," Matt said very quietly.

"Oh God." Elena turned away from Matt and wet her pillow with tears.

Matt touched her shoulder. "Elena…"

"Get away from me!" she yelled and Matt abruptly removed his hand. "Get out! I don't wanna see anyone."

Matt slowly stood up and left. Elena turned around in her bed and took a rose out of the bouquet, but its thorns just cut her fingers. She threw it on the floor and closed her eyes, crying herself to sleep.
