Chapter 1
One more hour. One more hour then he will be on his way home from the bakery. I can't wait to share my news with him, I thought. I am really scared. I am doing something I have never done. What if I mess up? I don't know how hard being a mother will be, but I will have Peeta and he is my rock. He is what keeps me anchored to reality and what is most important to me ever since Mother left District 12 and went to establish hospitals in the other districts. I miss her. Even though all of the districts have hospitals now, she still will not come home, where I will need her.
I spend the hour cleaning the house in which we live, in the Victor's Village. It is very lonely here, but Haymitch still lives here and when he is somewhat sober, he isn't all that bad.
I hear the front door open. Finally, I think, Peeta is home. "Peeta," I yell as loud as I possibly can. I run to the foyer and plant a kiss on his mouth.
"Wow," he says, "I should go away more often."
"Baby," I begin, "I have news."
"Well, by all means, share them," he replies.
"Well, I hope you are really excited because, well, you are going to be a father!"
Peeta lifts me off of my feet and spins me around. "Katniss, that is amazing! Wow, a baby. Do you know what this means?"
"What?"
"We have to tell your mother."
"Oh, God, I forgot about that. Do you think we will survive?"
"Well, we are Victors."
" I would rather face a pack of rampaging, murderous teenagers than face my mother."
"Well, you have me. And it will also be over the phone, so, she can't kill either of us. We are both mature adults."
"Okay, let's do this together."
