Dialogue Prompt: "Sometimes memories are the worst form of torture."
Most days Ryou was fine. He would wake up, make breakfast for both himself and a grumpy Ancient Egyptian spirit, go to school, hang out with his friends, and come home. Upon coming home, he would change, start his homework, cook dinner for himself and the same grumpy spirit, finish his homework, and then prepare for bed. Then he'd repeat the cycle the next day and the day after that until the summer came along.
Then there were days when he wasn't fine. On these days, he'd come home from school and his eyes drift would drift to the family portrait on the wall, displaying his family when it still contained four members. He focused on the smiling faces in the picture and felt his heart ache horribly. Then he'd sit in a chair in the living room as the past flashed through his eyes.
"Landlord, what are you doing?" the spirit had asked the first time he's seen Ryou sitting silently in that chair.
Ryou had only looked down at the hands in his lap and let out a small, humorless laugh before saying, "Sometimes memories are the worst form of torture."
The spirit didn't ask any more questions after that. Whenever he found Ryou in this state, he let him be and took care of his own needs. Whether this was because he wanted to give Ryou the space he needed or because he found Ryou's emotions weak, the teenager wasn't sure, but he was grateful.
On these days, Ryou wouldn't move until the sun no longer came through the window near his chair. Only when the sun went to rest did the teenager also go to rest. He would wake in a few hours to do his homework, ignoring his pangs of hunger and the swirling feelings in the pit of his stomach.
