Deep waters hold reflections

Of times lost long ago

Brave, I Will Fly

A/N: This one took me forever to write. I don't really understand Susan...*shakes head* Anyway, hope you enjoy this, and that it's not TOO out of character for her!

She was waiting for the others. Well, only Titty, Roger, and Peggy now, with Bridget in tow.

Susan was not a dreamy girl; that was Titty's domain. She was the efficient, brisk, on-time Walker. I have no time for dreams; SOMEONE has to pull the others out of scrapes, fix the tents properly, and make sure that dinner will be on the table...er...mat? Grass?! Boat?...not to mention all the other things!

She sighed a bit. Sometimes, it always seemed like the others expected her to do that sort of thing. It's always "Susan's with us; we'll be fine. Susan's got it! Susan, can I have a snack? Susan, did you pack my 'fill in the blank?"

And most of the time, I don't mind. But they seem to expect it now! All. The. Time!

Rather like how we expect deep waters to be calm, she thought, remembering a little scene from the day before.

She had been been on the stairs at Holly Howe, just resting a bit. Scraps of a conversation between Mother and Mrs. Blackett had drifted up to her.

"Susan doesn't seem to be affected by her birthday at all. Very strange that," Mrs. Blackett said. "Nancy was all upset by her 16th birthday, Peggy was resigned, but Susan takes it all in stride."

Mother smiled. "Susan is very deep; she doesn't show emotions much. Rather like a forest pool, like I used to play in when I was a girl. Nothing seemed to ruffled it, but it still had surprises in it."

"Nancy could use a bit of that!" Mrs. Blackett laughed.

She crept away, not wishing to intrude.

Well, perhaps I am deep, but who really cares? Now, where are those kids?

The sound of running feet made her whirl around. Peggy and Roger were racing down to her, with Titty and Bridgie bringing up the rear.

Susan Walker picked up the knapsacks and trudged down to the boats.
