The Germany that Wasn't

By b14ck-r053

Germany had promise; promise that began when Jess choose to room with Jules, not that Jess knew any of the other Harries as well as she knew Jules; promise that grew when Jules held Jess in their room after the latter had lost the match; promise that shattered when Jules saw Jess and Joe kiss, or almost-kiss.

The way Jules had figured it was that their team would either: a) win and celebrate by going clubbing, or b) lose and drown their post-game depression with booze Jules snuck out of her parent's liquor cabinet and into her luggage. In either instance, the blonde would be able to get Jess gloriously drunk without the girl resisting or remembering if Jules shagged (or at least snogged) her the morning after. It was perfect in theory, but this type of theory never meant much compared to reality.

How was Jules supposed to know that Joe had a "thing," as teenagery as it sounded, for Jess? Okay, maybe that was the wrong question to ask because Jules had noticed the way Joe looked at the Indian girl; she had noticed the extra care and attention he gave her. Perhaps the right question was: how was Jules supposed to know that Joe would break the "no shagging your players" rule? Of course it was bloody stupid of her to assume since he didn't do anything with her that he'd be the same around Jess.

Then again, she thought that Jess would have a little more self-control than that because Jules had told her that Joe was off limits because he was their bloody coach. But Jess was drunk and thus wasn't thinking clearly. In fact, Jules was pretty sure that with another half glass of whatever Jess was drinking the girl could have been hers when they got back to the room; that was if Jules had gone out there instead of Joe or if neither of them had gone out there at all; although she didn't particularly like the latter idea.

Of course, this wasn't the real reason why she was so bloody mad at Jess and Joe. She knew in the back of her head that she wasn't mad at either of them; she was fucking pissed at herself, and like a typical teenager, she took all of that anger out on them. Jules knew that she'd end up forgiving Jess in some form or another, exposing herself to the same pain that she experienced in Germany.

It was the beginnings of a twisted cycle that Jules would gladly accept because a little voice would tell her that maybe this time would be different. And it'd be ages before she'd tire of using the messenger excuse to see Jess; it'd be ages before she'd throw away that newspaper article with her and Jess' picture on it, this time for real; it'd be ages before she'd stop fantasizing about the Germany that wasn't and realize the Germany that was.
