Bullets exploded around me as I slapped a fresh mag into my m-4. As soon as I heard a momentary lull in in enemy fire, I poked my head out a squeezed out a three round burst. One round struck an Islamic extremist in the stomach, and he doubled over. I pulled back behind the wall my squad was hiding behind. As soon as I was safe, I lessened my grip on the weapon.
"Nice shot!" exclaimed the soldier beside me, a slim man by the name of Carn. I replied with a curt nod, and tried to relax. In battle I got a rush that in ever had anywhere else. Carn poked the barrel of his SAW out, and riddled the enemy position with .552 rounds. A hail of bullets replied, forcing Carn to go back behind the wall. Peering out, I saw an extremist loading an RPG.
"Down!" I yelled as it passed over head with a woosh. It exploded behind us, filling the already foul air with more dust. My throat begged for a drink of water, but I had none. I had forgotten to fill my canteen before leaving for this mission, a rookie mistake I hadn't made since my first deployment. The poping sound of an Ak-47 filled the air, and bullets rattled our position. An American screamed as he was hit. I glanced over to see the soldier in question griping his leg in a death grip as warm blood ran over his hands.
"Medic! Medic!" Screamed the man. "Shit!" cursed our medic, Darving. He rushed over, keeping as low as possible. I checked my ammo belt, I had one mag left. More rounds richoched around befor the battlefield fell silent. Moments later I knew why. The reapeting thud of the rotor blade of a nighthawk where sounding out over the city. The black heilo flew over, lighting up the enemy position with .50 caliber rounds from its sixteen barrel Vulcan gun. The rounds tore up the wall they where hiding behind, and blew them to pieces. Many soldiers cheered as this happened, because it ment that our job was easier.
One soldier made the mistake of standing up, only to have an Ak-47 round take his head off. Blood spurted form the wound as his headless body fell to the ground. For a moment I reflected at our mission: take this area by force. We originally set out with an idea that this would be a fast, easy battle. Little did we know that what we had entered would be far from easy.
