You Only Live Once Hi everyone, so just to let you all know, I am incredibly excited for this weeks casualty, because it looks amazing, I mean, Zax go public! The spoilers look good... This is my one-shot interpretation of how they get back together! Hope you enjoy :) Issy xx Zoe walked through the entrance to the ED, it was a normal day, although she was feeling happy, she had felt like this ever since she had been back with with Max, it was like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She made her way through reception, ready for a busy day as usual. After a long and boring few hours in cubicles and doing paperwork, Zoe put her hand into her bag to collect her chocolate, she could never cope without a sweet treat during her break. Max had told her to meet in his "office" when she was on her break. She walked up the stairs and along the corridor towards his office, casually slipping inside, to where Max was sitting waiting for her. 'Ahh, I've been expecting you, Dr Hanna.' Max said in a deep voice, causing Zoe to giggle. 'Whats the occasion?' 'Break time with my favourite consultant.' 'I'm glad to hear I'm the favourite...' Zoe said, biting into the bar of chocolate. 'You always have and always will be! Now gimme some chocolate!' Zoe sighed and passed over half of the bar. 'Thanks boss' 'I'm not your boss anymore' 'Good point' 'What're you gonna call me now?' 'Babe?' 'Nope, that's way to obvious' 'Obvious about what?' 'Us!' 'Why is it you don't want people knowing? What is it you're scared about?' Max asked. Zoe stared at the floor, before replying. 'I don't know, I guess I don't want to be judged, I mean who has ever heard of a porter and a consultant?' 'Does it bother you?' 'No, it really doesn't, well not anymore. But it might bother others.' 'Zoe, if it bothers them, they're not real friends, are they?' 'I know, I'm sorry, can I think about it?' Zoe asked. 'Sure, I'll be here, just tell me when you're ready.' Zoe nodded, before chucking the wrapper of the chocolate at Max and standing up. 'Don't I get a goodbye kiss?' Zoe asked, smiling. Max grinned before standing up and placing a kiss on Zoe's lips. Zoe pulled away and opened the door, slipping out unseen. It was hard, she really loved Max, but the last thing she wanted was to be the gossip of the ED. It would calm down, but still. Would she be able to cope under the pressure? Zoe walked down to cubicles where Rita asked her to see a patient. She nodded in response and pulled back the curtain. Sitting inside was an elderly lady. 'Hello Mrs...' Zoe glanced down at her file but the woman got there first. 'Roberts, but you can call me Susan.' The woman informed Zoe. 'Ok Susan, what seems to be the problem?' 'Susan has a suspected broken arm and also pains in her abdomen, from impact I think' Rita told the consultant. 'Ah, ok. How did that happen?' 'RTC, Susan was driving with her husband.' Rita told Zoe. 'Rita could you please book me an X-ray and CT. Susan how bad is the pain out of ten?' 'Around 7/8' 'Ok, and give her five of morphine please.' Rita nodded before walking out of the cubicle to book the X-ray. Zoe went to walk out, but Susan stopped her. 'Excuse me, doctor?' 'Yes?' Zoe asked. 'Could you stay with me? I'm very worried for my husband, he was badly injured. You see he was the driver.' 'Oh, I'm sorry about that. I'll stay with you, it's fine.' 'Thank you.' There was an awkward silence before Susan spoke. 'So, tell me a bit about yourself, kids, husband, boyfriend?' 'No kids, I do have a boyfriend though.' 'What's he like?' 'Really nice, I love him lots. Although nobody knows I'm going out with him.' 'Oh, why?' 'Well, he's not exactly appropriate for my age or the hierarchy of jobs here at the hospital.' 'Does it matter?' 'No, I would still love him no matter what. I'm just not quite sure how the department here would react.' 'You only live once.' Susan told Zoe. 'You are right, I probably should live a bit more.' 'Go for it. If he's what makes you happy. It's the same with my husband. I was a lawyer, and he was a cleaner. We're both retired now, but I never regretted choosing to be with him.' A tear fell down Susan's cheek as she remembered the state he was in, unconscious and critically ill. Rita pulled back the curtain and the two women were pulled out of their trance. Zoe snapped back into doctor mode and stepped out of the cubicle to call Max over. 'What do you need me for?' 'Susan needs taking to X-ray please.' Zoe told him. Max nodded and pushed Susan out of the cubicle. 'Doctor? Will you come with me?' 'Sorry Susan, I have some other patients I need to treat, Max will keep you company though.' Susan nodded and Max started chatting away to her as she was pushed out of the cubicle. Zoe brought out her phone and wrote a text to Max. Meet me at reception after you've finished your shift xx She pressed send and saw the small word "delivered" pop up underneath the text. She smiled to herself and walked over to the nurses station to drop off Susan's notes with Rita. The rest of the day went by slowly but eventually it turned 7pm and Zoe collected her bag from her office and walked through to reception. There, she saw Max talking to Robyn and Lofty, next to the desk. She took a deep breath, literally the whole department were here, most of them finishing shifts, and waiting to go to the pub. She walked over to Max, then tapped him on the back. Max spun round and saw Zoe standing behind him. 'I love you Max' Zoe said loud enough for the whole department to hear. Everyone went quiet and turned around to face them. Zoe didn't even look, she just put her arms around Max's neck and kissed him. He was surprised but returned the kiss. At this point Susan was being wheeled upstairs to a ward, just as the doors to the lift were closing, she looked out to see Zoe and Max kissing, and smiled to herself. The lift doors closed and Susan lost sight of them. As Zoe pulled back from Max, he grinned. 'I'm so proud of you Zoe.' Max whispered. 'I just had to do what was right, and as a patient told me, you only live once.' There was applause from around them and Max smiled. 'Couldn't agree more, babe.'
