43. Never

--

"I love you." The words fell out of his mouth easily. Mitchie shifted awkwardly – at a loss with words. Nobody had ever confessed love to her before, especially someone as famous as Shane. She took a deep breath, her eyes searching his for something other than the love and honesty shining in them now.

"I'm sorry, Shane. I don't feel the same." She whispered, close to tears. She felt horrible, but leading him on would just make things worse.

"We're so different, Shane. I could never love you. We just don't match." Mitchie said softly, watching his carefully. She waited for a response but she didn't get one - instead he placed a hand on her cheek and she shivered at the sudden contact. His hand was cold and she wanted to step away and stay in the same place all at once.

"I could never love you." She repeated, placing her hand over his. It wasn't the best way to prove a point but she'd hoped it would make him realize she was serious. "My life isn't like yours. I'm not famous, for one. I listen to different music, read different books, I still go to school while you're playing to sold out concerts and screaming fans. Shane it wouldn't work. I don't want this."

"Tough shit." Shane replied, and before she could move he placed his lips on hers. She didn't know what to do, just stood there frozen. She counted two seconds before finally giving in.
