The One That Got Away

Nick and Judy are the perfect couple. They fight crime together, they get into little disputes together, and most of all they give Clawhauser even more donuts… together. Everything they did was together. Nothing could separate them. Not even Chief Bogo's death glares, no matter how daunting they could be.

On your average day, these two would go on patrol, find some wrongdoing, and stop it. This system helped keep Zootopia safer for everyone. Well, everyone except… him. Nick never knew how much danger he was in all the time. Judy was always over-protected of him, especially after their marriage 2 years ago.

That day started like any other, them patrolling Tundratown in their police cruiser. They were drinking a coffee, trying to not get too cold. "Damn Judy, I'm practically freezing my tail off!" could be heard from Nick's quivering lips, his body curled up in front of the heater's vent in the car.

"Get use to it, that stunt cost us being warm for another week. Did you have to super glue Bogo into his chair?" Judy piped in. her foot was on the verge of breaking through the bottom of the car, she was shivering so much. Normally, Tundratown isn't this cold; somebody accidentally hit a power pole, shorting one of the regulator's circuits.

"You gotta admit, that was funny, and you know it." Nick smirked as he knew he was right. They had laughed their tails off for a good ten minutes before Bogo finally managed to shatter the chair on a pillar, effectively snapping them out of their humorous glee. He did NOT see the funny side of this, as his boxers with Gazelle print could be seen through the big hole in the back.

"Hey Carrots, wanna go get a pizza? It's about lunch time and we need a break from the cold." Judy couldn't have said her answer faster: "yeah, lets go." The two drove to the local pizzeria, but upon arrival, they heard a call go over the radio. "All units, we have a 10-71 near Tundratown Ice Rink, any officers available please respond, over." "10-4 Clawhauser, Wilde unit moving to assist." "Copy that Wilde, the suspect is erratic and not responding to us, be careful." Clawhauser barely managed to get that last line over the radio before he heard their sirens start and the tires spin on their cruiser.

It took ten minutes to arrive, and along the way, the duo had small talk.

"How's the family, Carrots?"

"Good Nick, yours?"

"As good as an average fox can be in this city."

Oh, that's right. Judy had forgotten that, even though he proved that all foxes can be worth something, prejudices die hard. His mom had fallen on hard times recently, because some hoodlums robbed her store late one night. She lost it all. Nick was still upset over that, but it doesn't bother him as much now. It was 7 months ago.

"Dispatch, we have a visual on the suspect, over." Judy radioed in while Nick got out of the car and proceeded to move to the gunman. Their suspect was a badger, and she seemed off. At first, they saw her eyes were dilated to their max, almost solid black. Her posture suggested drugs involved, and worst of all, the handgun tucked into her belt was cocked, hammer held back ready to fire.

"Nick, I'm gonna call this in, keep her calm." In a worried tone, Nick replied "will do, but hurry up, she is deteriorating quickly." With a nod, Judy went back to the car to call in the situation. "Dispatch, suspect is armed and under the influence of some substance. Requesting back, over." As she said this, she heard Nick getting a little worried. "Judy, come here please!" he said with a little too much dread.

Judy walked over to him, but something happened that shocked them both. Literally. The badger used a stun gun to stop both officers, and then proceeded to run. Once they caught their breath, the officers gave pursuit. "This is Judy, come in! Suspect is on foot, and is dangerous. We need backup now!" When Judy realized what the badger was running to, but it was too late. Nick was on the skating rink, chasing their suspect, when she turned around and shot the ice nick was on. He caught on quick, but not as fast at the bullets fired. The ice broke and he fell through.

Judy was there in seconds, but the badger kicked her in the side, launching her to the right. She then proceeded to hold Nick under the water, intent to drown him. Judy was having none of that, so she tackled the badger. Nick surfaced, coughing up water and shivering from the cold. To make matters worse, Judy was losing to the badger, and finally, the badger brought her gun butt down on her head, and she was out light a light.

"…you hear me? Hopps? Hopps!" It was a familiar voice, but in her daze she didn't know who. "Answer me goddamnit! Don't do this to me, Judy please wake up!" She finally opened her eyes to the world again, and she saw Nick. His are was bleeding, and he had a nasty cut on his cheek that will leave a permanent scar, no doubt. "Thank god, I thought she killed you! Are you alright?" "Yeah Nick… I'm fine. Where… where is the suspect?" still dazed a little, Judy slowed her words to make sure she wasn't just mumbling. Nick told her what happened.

After the badger knocked out Judy, Nick went crazy. He punched, kicked, and clawed the suspect until she lay still on the ground, not dead but not far from it. He radioed help, but they would be a while. After he told her what happened, she lay down and relaxed, knowing that the suspect was suppressed for now was good. It wasn't until Judy heard a clicking noise that she looked up. The badger was pointing the gun at her, and the clicking was the hammer cocking back, ready to do what it was made for.

Nick saw this, but he wasn't fast enough. Judy was shot in the shoulder, making her forcefully lie down. Nick jumped in front of her at that point, but the badger wasn't done. She shot Nick 3 times: through the stomach area, spurting blood and ruined fur back on Judy a little. The next shot hit him in the thigh, and you could hear the bone shattering as the bullet hit it with tremendous speed and power. It wasn't until the last shot did Judy get really concerned. The first 2 were survivable, with immediate medical help. The next shot could be a little trickier. The bullet hit him in the vest, but it hit a seam and went through at an angle, going through his lung and exiting out the back. Nick tensed up, and for a moment, he didn't bleed, just looked on in horror as the badger that he just raged on shot him 3 times.

Like all things, they must come to an end. Nick fell back, landing next to Judy, and blood poured from the 6 open wounds in his body. Judy, not worried about the badger, tried to get up. She couldn't even walk to him; the pain was just too much. But, she reasoned, mind over matter, and he is dying in front of my eyes. So, she crawled. By the time she got to him, there was a pool of crimson spreading around him. Paramedics arrived very soon afterwards, and carted Nick away. Before he was wheeled into the ambulance, he barely said "J-J-Judy… no m-matter what, I-I-I love you…" he shuddered violently, and then went limp. He was soon in the ambulance, CPR being done as they went.

Judy, having the adrenaline wear off, collapsed. Her gunshot hadn't been too obvious, but now that she was lying down, her own pool of blood began to form. The medics at the scene loaded her onto a stretcher as soon as possible, and drove to the hospital. She remembered vaguely that she was in a vehicle at all, an obvious sign of blood loss. She soon began to fade in and out of consciousness. Tiny little bits here and there popped in, like the little prick in her arm, or the pressure on her shoulder, or the searing pain as they removed the bullet before she was fully numb. She eventually remembers everything going black.

(This is my first story on FanFiction ever, and I hope it turns out well. I know the grammar and the logic isn't on point, but I'm learning. Please leave a comment on what should happen next. I know what will, but I wanna see what you guys come up with. Peace!)
