Yes, I seem to have written another story. And it's awful. I'm sorry; perhaps now you understand my name.
Though he didn't know it, Yugi first encountered the Pharaoh shortly after receiving the puzzle.
It began one fateful day in fourth grade. He walked into the classroom to find Anzu already there, waiting for him.
This in and of itself wasn't unusual. Unlike Yugi, Anzu was responsible enough to get to class more than a minute before the bell. What was unusual was the stack of origami paper she was bent over.
She was so engrossed in her folding that she didn't even look up until Yugi made his way to her desk.
"Good morning, Anzu!" Yugi said.
"Hello, Yugi, " Anzu replied before noticing Yugi staring at the stack of paper in front of her. "I know, it looks weird. But I just learned how to fold paper cranes, and it's so much fun! You should try it."
"I don't know..."
"Besides, I've heard that if you fold one thousand of them, you get a wish."
Yugi paused at that. Sure, Anzu was nice, but it would be nice to have other friends...
"Okay, I'll try it."
Anzu beamed. "Great! Here, have some paper."
And so, Yugi began to fold.
He continued folding throughout class. He folded while helping his grandpa at the game shop. He even folded while playing games with his grandpa after supper.
Finally, he reached one thousand. He hung them up in a garland around the room to facilitate better wishing, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath.
"I wish... for friends. Even one would do, as long as I knew I could always count on them."
Yugi opened his eyes and looked around. He didn't expect a friend instantly, but maybe he could get some kind of sign.
No, his room looked the same. Same wallpaper, same dresser, same Millenium Puzzle sitting on the dresser. He sighed, and headed for the door.
As he walked out of the room, he thought he heard a voice from behind him. "Don't worry, little one," it seemed to say. "You won't have to wait much longer."
He turned around eagerly, hoping to see this new friend.
All he saw was the Millenium Puzzle, gleaming softly in the sunlight.
